"Kolkata Metro to get 72 more cars from BEML", says Mr. D K Hota, CMD, BEML
Apr 27, 2018

Further to the supply of two train sets to Kolkata Metro, BEML Ltd, the only Indian company to manufacture hi-tech world-class Metro cars, will supply another 72 cars to Kolkata Metro by this financial year, according to the CMD of the PSU, Mr D K Hota.

“BEML is also executing metro contract for 150 cars to BMRCL and also supplying metro cars to DMRC phase-3 project. The extension orders from DMRC and BMRC for about 150 metro cars are in the pipeline for BEML,” Mr Hota said at the Rail Connect East 2018, a conference organized by CII in partnership with Research Designs & Standards Organization (RDSO), Indian Railways and a few specialized organizations under its umbrella, here today.

Till date more than 1200 metro cars have been supplied by BEML to Kolkata, Delhi, Bengaluru and Jaipur, said Mr. Hota. “Some of the upcoming metro rolling stock projects include Mumbai Metro Line 2 & 7, BMRCL phase - 2, Delhi Metro leasing project, etc,” he said.

In his view, high-speed trains not only save time and significantly enhance mobility, there is also a strong case from the environmental and sustainability perspective. High-speed trains are the most fuel efficient mode and has a very small carbon footprint (Emissions per passenger kilometer is 4 Kg of CO2 by rail, 14 Kg of CO2 by road and 17 Kg of CO2 by air), he said, adding that though investment in high-speed rail is very high, it ensures reliability, safety and comfort.

According to him, BEML has tied up with Japanese company Hitachi.

Earlier in his theme address, Mr S K Gupta, Executive Director (Stores), RDSO, called upon the “vendor community” to join the “massive augmentation and modernization” exercise by the Government. “To make this a success, greater industry participation is a must. If you supply quality materials to the Indian Railways, the result will be win-win for all,” Mr Gupta said, adding that vendor approval process has become a lot more easy, transparent and fair. “Everything is online now. All manual interventions have been done away with,” he said.

Dr Lakshmi Raman, Executive Director (QAM Directorate), RDSO, said that track renewal is going on at a frenetic pace. “The entire Railway system is getting drastically improved – something which will reduce logistics cost,” he said.

Mr Anil Vaswani, Co-Chairman, CII ER Manufacturing Excellence Subcommittee, said the conference seeks to engage more new manufacturers and service providers in the East.

“We believe Railways will be a significant contributor to the 'Make in India' programme through its focus on indigenizing production of a host of segments, including state-of-the-art locomotives, high-end equipment and processes, that go into the working of the network. We in CII appreciate the relentless efforts being put by RDSO leadership in this direction,” Mr Vaswani said.

Mr Sudipta Mukherjee, Director, Titagarh Wagons Ltd, said the forum seeks to help industry and ancillaries to get closer to the Indian Railways, arguably a major growth engine of India. They are one of the most important part of a larger supply chain whose contribution to the national development is immense.
