Common platforms for interactions with industry are the need to address key issues: J&K Parliamentarians

With an objective to align the vision of J&K’s Industry with state’s parliamentarians and set an actionable agenda for inclusive growth of state, a CII delegation comprising of senior Industry leaders from J&K met with Parliamentarians from the state at Delhi. In his welcome remarks, Mr Sheikh Imran, Chairman, J&K State Council spoke about various macro level challenges & issues confronting the state and how J&K needs to capitalize on its inherent strengths in Tourism, Food Processing, Horticulture, & Agro-Processing.

Mr Rajesh Sharma, senior CII industry member raised the valid concern of un-used industrial land units. Sheikh Imran, while briefing the parliamentarians on CII’s initiatives in J&K, expressed the need to market & promote J&K as an ideal investment destination. He apprised the parliamentarians of CII initiatives in attracting investments to the state from various platforms, drafting and submitting the proposed Startup Scheme for the state to give boost to the dreams of entrepreneurs. He also highlighted the issues pertaining to Infrastructure, Connectivity, Power, and Skilling faced by the state. He strongly established the need to extend the central excise and custom exemptions beyond 2017 to give support and boost to the industry that is being hit by natural calamities and unrest.

Mr Sheikh Imran briefed the parliamentarians on CII’s view point on areas affecting the state and sought their support & consensus on major policy decisions related to tourism. He requested MP’s to push for the inclusion of J&K in the Central Tourism Policy as the focus state. Taking examples from the best practices of Israel, Imran urged members to raise concerns on water recycling and management.

While responding to the issues raised, Sh Shamsher Singh Manhas, Hon’ble Member of Parliament first of all welcomed the platform for such type of interactions and assured his support to the industry of the state. He briefed the CII members on the overall developmental vision of Hon’ble PM, he however raised a serious concern over the lack of roadmap for J&K. Calling this interaction the right and timely effort to initiate the dialogues for drafting the roadmap of growth for J&K, he called for focusing on sectors like Power, Connectivity and Agriculture for inclusion in the roadmap. Recommending a more assertive approach, Mr Manhas called for more one to one interactions with respective ministers in central government on a common platform.

Sh Manhas also shared with members that he is pushing for a rail coach factory in J&K for providing maximum number of jobs to the youth in J&K.

Bringing focus on the Ladakh region, Mr Imran shared with the members that CII is the only apex industrial body to have a strong representation from the Ladakh region. He stressed that Ladakh should be promoted as the Focused Solar City. Further he raised the matter of slow work on Z-Morh Tunnel. Mr Thupstan Chhewang, Hon’ble MP, Ladakh appreciated the focus of CII on ladakh and informed the attendees on the status of the tunnel and other areas where Ladakh needs to be focused on. He promised more such platforms for interaction with CII members. He briefed members on the rarity and uniqueness of Ladakh region and invited CII members for making collaborative efforts for the growth of Ladakh region.
