Yi Goa World Environment Day

Yi - Goa in association with Mineral Foundation of Goa, Department of Forests, and Vivekanand Environment Awareness Brigade supported a Nature Walk to Savari Waterfalls in Netravali, Sanguem Goa to commemorate the World Environment Day on 5th June 2011.
 
The Nature Walk / hike led by Mr. Parag Rangnekar, Program Officer, Mineral Foundation of Goa all the way up to the beautiful Savari Waterfalls along with around 80 student volunteers from various schools in Goa and other nature enthusiasts trekked up to the waterfall during an hour long trek through the magnificent mountains, streams and virgin forests.
 
At the waterfall a clean-up drive of the entire place was organised with the help of the students, volunteers and other participants.
 
A commemorative signboard was carried all the way up to the waterfall by the volunteers and installed at the location to inform visitors of the Do's and Dont's on waste-management, environment conservation, safety etc.
 
The group of volunteers / participants collected and brought down more than 130 kilos of garbage like plastic bags, wrappers, pet bottles, plastic items like cups, plates, containers, glass bottles, beer cans, metal containers and other non-biodegradable waste. Thereafter lunch was served at a local villager’s house to all the participants.  The garbage was delivered to a Recycling Centre in Panjim.
 
World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5th as an annual event aimed at positive environmental action. This year, India is the host country for the first time since the celebrations began in 1972. The theme for this year is “Forests”

Yi Goa Chapter plans to of visiting this location and repeating this hike shortly.
