UK Health Minister calls for strong partnership in healthcare sector

Confederation of Indian Industry (Southern Region) in association with the British Deputy High Commission, Chennai organised a Meeting with the UK Health Sector Mission in Chennai on 17 January 2013.  The UK delegation was led by Ms Anna Soubry, Health Minister, Government of the United Kingdom.

In her special address at the session,  Ms Soubry said, “UK is keen to strengthen its partnership with India in the healthcare sector as both nations have a vibrant healthcare industry.  We would like to invite key universities, colleges and companies in Tamil Nadu to the UK  to explore partnerships in education, research, training and technology related to heathcare, said the Minister.   Between the two of us, there's lot to learn and offer each other, especially in the private and public healthcare service delivery to the masses, the minister added.

Mr Mike Nithavriankis,  Deputy High Commissioner, British Deputy High Commission in his address said, “we are looking forward to a long standing partnership with India. India has shown huge potential in healthcare sector and we would like to derive expertise from India for advancing the healthcare sector in UK.  We would  like to have mutually beneficial alliance between the two countries by sharing the best practices and skills to develop the healthcare sector in our respective countries, he said.

Dr R Chandrakumar, Co-Chairman, Healthcare Sub-Committee,  CII Southern Region said ,  “healthcare is a fastest growing sector in India, which constitutes 5% of country’s GDP.  Indian companies are proactively looking for British partners in all areas of medical technology, pharmaceuticals and in-vitro diagnostics, and this mission provide a unique opportunity to meet with technology / manufacturing companies from UK , said Dr Chandrakumar.   

He said that India has a cost advantage in the ratio of 1 : 6, compared with its counterparts in the US and European countries, thereby providing huge opportunity for growth of health tourism in India.   India’s prowess in information technology sector would  drive telemedicine, which would aid in expanding the reach of healthcare services to tier II and III towns, he added.

Around 80 delegates participated at the session as well as in the B2B meetings organised with members of the UK healthcare mission.
