Tamil Nadu poised to emerge as a global healthcare destination

“Tamil Nadu is an internationally recognized State in the healthcare sector, as it offers high quality, cost effective healthcare services of global standards”, said   Mr Mike Nithavrianakis, Deputy High Commissioner, British Deputy High Commission in his inaugural address a the 2-Day International Conference and Exhibition on Health Tourism organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), here today.

Mr Nithavrianakis  said, “Britain is keen to strengthen its partnership with India in the healthcare domain and added that UK is planning to send high-level business delegation to India  this year to explore collaborations in the healthcare sector”. 

In his special address,  Mr Narayan Sethuramon, Chairman, CII - Tamil Nadu & Managing Director and CEO, WS Industries (India) Ltd said Tamil Nadu has successfully emerged as one of the country’s premier healthcare destination of India.   Chennai hosts the influx of 40% of the country’s total medical tourists.  Every year, on an average of 6.65 lakh well- enamored medical tourists visits Tamil Nadu, he added.

Government should provide healthcare sector incentives that are equal to those provided to the IT sector, as healthcare has the potential to create employment opportunities much more than what the IT industry can offer, said Mr Sethuramon

In his Theme address Dr S Chandrakumar, Convenor - Healthcare Panel, CII Tamil Nadu & Managing Director, Kauvery Hospitals said that Medical Tourism is rapidly growing in India.  Reasonable cost and excellent IT networking facilities are the key factors which contributes high influx of foreign visitors seeking medical aid in India, he added.

Dr Srinidhi Chidambaram,  Vice President, Apollo Hospitals Group in her special address said, “Care, Clinical Excellence, Cost-Factor and Collaboration  are the 4 C’s which helps medical tourism to gain new dimensions in Tamil Nadu.  In India, complicated surgical procedures are being done at 1/10th the cost as compared with the cost of developed countries with the same excellent outcomes added Dr Srinidhi

Dr S Raja Sabapathy, Director, Ganga Hospital delivered the welcome address and   Dr S Gurushankar, Vice Chairman, Meenakshi Mission Hospital & Research Centre provided the conclusion remarks.

Speaking at a Plenary Session on ‘Challenges of Health Tourism’, Dr P Senthil Kumar, IAS, Special Secretary, Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Tamil Nadu said that  Tamil Nadu is already renowned for healthcare facilities and the State will aggressively position itself as the medical tourism destination of South Asia, as envisaged in the Vision 2023 Document released by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.  

With the presence of high quality medical and paramedical institutions, Tamil Nadu play a critical role in providing quality healthcare services to the people of the State said Dr Kumar. 

Dr R Kannan, IAS, Principal Secretary, Tourism & Culture Department, Government of Tamil Nadu in his address said that Government of Tamil Nadu has taken specific initiatives to promote medical tourism in the State.    Cities such as, Chennai, Vellore, Coimbatore & Madurai have already emerged as key destinations for medical tourism, he added.

Mr Mike Nithavrianakis, Deputy High Commissioner, British Deputy High Commission earlier inaugurated the 2-Day International Exhibition on Health Tourism. Over 40 companies comprising Hospitals & Speciality Clinics, Hotels & Resorts, Medical Tourism Organisations, State Tourism Promotion Corporations, Travel & Tour Operators, Embassies & Trade Offices participated at the exhibition.
