Industry needs to focus on Reuse and Recycling of water to ensure Water use efficiency and to address the challenges of Climate Change said Dr D S C Thambi, Member Secretary, Central Ground Water Board.

In the midst of looming water scarcity, there is an imperative need to improve the water usage efficiency in every aspect of human life , was the message that reverberated at the Workshop  and Training Programme on “Promoting Water Use Efficiency in Industry and Building to Address Climate Change” organized jointly by CII Haryana, USAID and CII Triveni Water Institute at Faridabad today. The focus of the event is to forge a road map to embark on promoting water use efficiency in industry and building in Faridabad.

Mr Jeremy Gustafson, Director, Clean Energy and Environment, USAID, emphasized the need to reduce the consumption of water without wastage and undertake recycling & reusing, to put waste water to beneficial purpose.

Incentivising industry and encouraging domestic & commercial building to treat their sewerage & wastewater, can bring about a big change in the urban water sector, mentioned Mr Ramani Iyer, Member, CII National Water Council.

Dr S C Thambi, Member Secretary, CGWB  said that today the quality of ground water is a much more critical issue than the quantity of water. He  outlined the various initiative under the National Water Mission constituted by the Government of India for managing the ground water resources with a participatory approach, to ensure the desired outcome.  He said that the depleting water resources and the mismanagement of the same, is having drastic effect on the environment that sustains life.
 Mr Raj Bhatia, Past Chairman, CII Haryana State Council in his welcome address stressed that measures should be  taken to ensure water security for all and that each  Industry should strive to be water positive.

 Mr Ajai Joneja, Chairman CII Faridabad Zone in his address said that the changing lifestyle and careless attitude have resulted in mismanagement of the available water resources and he urged industry to implement water audits to build a road map to ensure water use efficiency.

Mr Pranab Dasgupta, Senior Counselor, CII-Triveni Water Institute; introduced the project to the participants explaining the key components, focus areas and final deliverables. He also shared some of the best international practices on water conservation and management.

During the next session Mr C Sripati, Counselor, CII-Triveni Water Institute; Mr Varun Mehta, CEO, Green Systems; Mr Manish Gandhi, Associate Vice President, Ion Exchange Ltd; Mr Mahesh Harhare, ICRA Management Consulting Services Ltd; and Mr Shyam Agarwal, Green Tech Solutions shared information and knowhow on various issues relating to improving the water usage efficiency. 

The workshop also focused on  building the capacity of stakeholders, sharing know-how regarding cutting edge technology and best practices  to improve water use efficiency.

This workshop & training program organised in Faridabad is the first in the series of similar  programmes that would be conducted in the cites of  Pune and Jaipur where the objective would be  to advance sustainable water management for building resiliency of vulnerable populations to global climate change. The project in each of these cities would offer opportunities to optimize water management across industrial, municipal, and household uses, and reuse of treated wastewater.
 
The program was attended by representatives from government, industry and academia in large numbers from in and around Faridabad.
