‘Indo-UK Collaboration in Healthcare to Scale New Heights’

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) organized a Conference on Indo-UK Collaboration in Healthcare here today in Chennai.

The Rt Hon Kenneth Clarke, British Cabinet Minister and the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy, during his Chief Guest address said, “the Indian private sector is renowned for offering world-class healthcare in India’s big cities.   India and the UK can work together for mutual benefit as healthcare is one of the key sectors which would contribute towards economic growth and also play a vital role in providing quality public healthcare service to the masses.

Mr Clarke added, “UK universities offer training not just to doctors but to a range of allied healthcare professionals including training staff to operate complicated equipment. The UK health business delegation currently visiting India  have a unique mix of experience and skill that they are keen to offer to India, from design and operating a hospital to creating digital records or skill in operating state-of-the-art equipment. I’d like to see a vibrant and growing Indo-UK healthcare partnership as a way of opening up a whole range of business partnerships with India”.

Ms Shobana Kamineni, Chairperson, CII National Committee on Public Health &  Executive Director, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd said, “to make the Indian healthcare Industry more vibrant, we need to create  huge infrastructure to make available quality and affordable healthcare service accessible to all

Ms Kamineni  said that infrastructure status for the healthcare sector would enable industry to offer cost effective high quality healthcare to wider section of the population, besides opportunity for long term funding for healthcare related projects.   The Indian healthcare sector has potential to touch US$100 billion by 2020, she further added.

Healthcare is now part of India’s skills agenda. What we would welcome from the UK is the innovation that the UK is renowned for. The world owes the UK several innovations, such as the MRI. And we would welcome low-cost innovative solutions from the UK said Ms Kamineni.

Mr Mike Nithavrianakis, British Deputy High Commissioner for Southern India and Mr Raju Venkatraman, Member, Healthcare Sub Committee, CII Southern Region also spoke at the session.
