India and the African countries should explore healthcare cooperation: Mr B S Bhalla, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce & Industry

India and the African countries should consider forming a working group to explore healthcare cooperation, especially in sharing local level experiences in healthcare of both the regions, to help tackle the spread of these diseases, said Mr B S Bhalla, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce & Industry. He pointed out that there were similarities in the healthcare scenarios of India and Africa such as, inability to eliminate communicable diseases like malaria and high burden of communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension. He was speaking at the session on ‘Affordable, Accessible & Preventive Healthcare’ in the ‘India- Africa Health Forum’ as a part of ‘Global Exhibition on Services’ organized by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry in association with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) here. 

Also speaking at the session, Hon’ble Dr. Kebwe Stephen Kebwe (MP), Deputy Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Government of Tanzania and Hon’ble Dr. Chitalu Chilufya, Deputy Minister of Health, Government of Zambia, emphasized the importance of improving and strengthening their relation with India in providing high quality and affordable health services in their respective countries. 

Hon’ble Dr. Chilufya, emphasized that cooperation from Indian government and companies in the health care space would specifically be important in bridging the gap in the area of developing healthcare professionals, accessing high quality-affordable essential drugs from India, building infrastructure and strengthening leadership for optimum resource allocation. In addition, he highlighted the need for sharing of experiences and learnings from India in improving the healthcare services in Zambia. 

Mr Rajesh Kapoor, Director-Technical, Telecommunications Consultants India Limited stressed on the importance of Tele-medicine Networks as the way forward for meeting the objective of Affordable, Accessible & Preventive Healthcare. He substantiated this by highlighting the success of e-Network Pan Africa project. Dr Shaveta Dewan, Lead-Apollo Quality Program and Special.

Initiatives, Apollo Hospitals Group, focused on the role of Apollo hospitals in healthcare space and in building and nurturing Indo-African relations in the same.
