2nd Water Innovation Summit 2016 Economic Growth & Human Development in the context of Water Scarcity & National Water Awards for Excellence in Water Management

Dr Anil Kakodkar, Chief of Jury, CII National Awards for Excellence in Water Management & Member, AEC, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre laid emphasis on the need for undertaking qualitative and quantitative management of the scarce resource. He discussed the importance of real time monitoring of water resources including water quality in taking appropriate measures at the local decentralized level. A open data sharing system complemented by effective governance mechanisms at the grass root level can have the desired impact in the sector.

Community level organization can be pivotal in bringing about a desired transformation in water sector. Speaking at the 2nd Water Innovation Summit focusing on Economic Growth & Human Development in the context of Water Scarcity, Mr Arun Maira, Former Member, Planning Commission, GoI pitched for People Public Private Partnership (PPPP) in the water sector. He also stressed to ensure quantification of results through proper measurement in order to manage the scarce water resources effectively.

Effective partnerships between government and industry is crucial for ensuring water and food security, said Dr Amarjit Singh, Officer on Special Duty, Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation. He also mentioned that governance structures at the lowest level have to be managed well towards achieving the above objective.

“As 50% of aquifers and rivers are in a critical condition” Mr Dhruv M Sawhney, Chairman, CII –Triveni Water Institute, Past President, CII & Chairman & Managing Director, Triveni Engineering & Industries Ltd felt “the drivers of change in the water sector are strongest in the current scenario”.

Mr Ravi Singh, Secretary General, WWF India highlighted the criticality and centrality of effective water management which transform the lives of in rural areas.  Blending traditional wisdom of the community with scientific acumen can also bring about desired change in the water sector, mentioned Mr N K Ranganath, Co- Chairman, CII National Committee on Water & Managing Director Grundfos India Pvt Ltd. Other speakers included Ms Katherine Russell, Director, Strategy and Corporate Affairs Water Industry Commission for Scotland (WICS);  Mr Arun Lakhani, Chairman & Managing Director, Vishvaraj Infrastructure Ltd; Mr Ashok Natarajan, Chief Executive Officer, Tamilnadu Water Investment Company Ltd; and Mr Ashish Mathur, Managing Director, JUSCO Ltd

The Summit provided a platform to deliberate upon concerns with regard to availability of water and an inextricable link with Economic Growth & Human Development of the Country. It brought together experts from Industry, Government and Institutions to build integrative strategies to facilitate an effective and integrated role with invaluable collaborative opportunities to ensure unhindered economic growth and human development.

During the course of the summit 7 companies were awarded for their exemplary and innovative work undertaken in the field of Water Management. The winner “within the fence” category are- Bajaj Auto Limited, Waluj, Aurangabad, Maharashtra; Godrej & Boyce Mfg. Co. Ltd. (Appliances Division), Shirwal, Maharashtra; Trident Limited (Home Textile Division), Barnala, Punjab; and Mahindra & Mahindra Limited, Plant 1, Nashik, Maharashtra. Similarly, under the “beyond the fence” category Lupin Limited, GAIL (India) Limited and ITC Limited were adjudged as the winners for implementing watershed initiatives at Junnar (Maharashtra), Jhabua (Madhya Pradesh) and  Jhalawar, (Rajasthan) respectively thereby impacting the lives and livelihood of the community.
