Learning not an acquisition but construction of knowledge

Today, the Yi Lucknow chapter of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with Vidyatree Modern World College as Knowledge Partner organised a brilliant seminar on Future of Education with some of the most eminent educationists from across the country. Well into the 21stcentury, where we all are exposed to new applications and gadgets every day, it is only pertinent that we asked ourselves as what kind of education would be needed in the decades to come. The seminar was an attempt to gauge what the education scenario would be like for all stakeholders; parents, teachers, parents and schools.  

‘Children starting school today will enter careers that do not yet exist, using technology that hasn’t been invented yet.’

The panellists of the seminar were educationists Dr. Hrushikesh Senapaty, Director, National Council of Education, Research, who was also the chief guest of the session, Prof. M M Pant, Former Pro-Vice-Chancellor IGNOU, IIT Kanpur & Visiting Professor to the University of Western Ontario, Canada, Mr. Kaiser Dopiashi, President, South Asian IB Schools Association and Principal, Singapore International School, Mumbai,Prof. Himanshu Rai, Formerly Dean MISB Bocconi, Mumbai & Professor at IIM Lucknow,Mr. Kumar Lalit, General Manager (HR, IR, Admin), Tata Motors and Mr. Rakesh Kapoor,Founder, Vidyatree Modern World College

They shared their experiences and viewpoints on the changing scenario of the education system.

Dr. Hrushikesh Senapaty said that learning is not acquisition but more construction of knowledge and therefore students have to be proactive learners rather than being passive knowledge gainers.

Prof. M M Pant explained how the change in the education system from the past to the present is of one of information scarcity to that of information abundance

Mr. Kaiser Dopiashi emphasised on the importance of developing multiple skills in the students. Today, the learning ability of the youth is tremendous and therefore the source of information should be reliable.

From the industry perspective, Mr. Kumar Lalit, said that in order to create ethics-based business, profession etc, the education system should focus more on quality content and a moral education-based learning system.

Mr. Rakesh Kapoor focused on the fact that in order to raise the learning capacity of students, we need to enhance the same of the teacher first. In order to make student’s mind more constructive and awakened, teacher’s mind should simultaneously be equally constructive and awakened.

The panel discussion was followed by launch of the book, “Power of Knowing Thyself in Zero Time”, by Mr Rakesh Kapoor, Founder, Vidyatree Modern World College. The evening wrapped up with the national anthem sung by the students of Vidyatree Modern World College.

The seminar was well attended by over 170 representatives from diverse sectors; like education, bureaucracy, industry, CII and Yi members.
