Amitabh Kant calls WATSCAN and WatSmart as CII's best gift to Industry

Stating that Water will be number 1 priority for governance, Mr Amitabh Kant, Chief Executive Officer, NITI Aayog launched CII’s latest water tool, WatSmart today at the 3rd Water Innovation Summit 2017 on Economic Growth and Human Development  in the context of water scarcity. WatSmart assesses and ranks companies in water management and water efficiency. It is the second instrument developed by CII-Triveni Water Institute in the field of water management, with WATSCAN, a digital Water Evaluation and Planning Tool as the first one.

National Water Awards for Excellence in Water Management were also presented. For exemplary and innovative work undertaken in the field of Water Management,Ambuja Cement Foundation, Hindustan Unilever Foundation and Ultratech Cement Limited were adjudged as the winners in ‘Beyond the Fence’ Category. Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd., Tata Steel Limited, Jamshedpur, GMR Warora Energy Limited, Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Limited., UFLEX Limited – Chemicals Division, Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited., Asian Paints Ltd. Khandala plant, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. Igatpuriand Grasim Industries Ltd. (Chemical Division) were adjudged as winners in “Within the fence” category.

Mr Kant said that tools such as CII’s WATSCAN and WATSMART would enable action on ground by the industry backed by digital and scientific assessment. Noting that state governments are now emphasising water management, he lauded CII’s role in technology development  for this increasingly scarce resource.

Ms Karlene Maywald, Former Minister & Chair, National Water Commission, and International Adviser, South Australian Government shared how her government had to take rigorous policy decisions to spearhead the concept of water management in Australia. She emphasised that technology is vital in water conservation efforts in India and also expressed her interest in extending the application of the same tool to Australia.

Mr Suresh Prabhu, Hon’ble Minister for Commerce and Industry in his video address stressed on the need to explore water conservation measures like reuse of treated water, changing cropping patterns etc.

Ms Shobhana Kamineni, President, CII stressed that 1.8 billion people would be affected by water crisis globally by 2025, with a considerable population from India included. Ms Kamineni stressed that being water smart was the way forward for doing sustainable business.

Mr Dhruv M Sawhney, Past President, CII & Chairman CII – Triveni Water Institute pitched forthe necessity to act immediately on water conservation, given the current water scenario in the country.

Mr N K Ranganath Member of Jury, CII National Awards for Excellence in Water Management, spoke about the importance of long term planning to achieve the desired results in water conservation efforts. Mr Ranganath suggested the CII Triveni Water Institute to internationalise the newly launched WATSMART tool which has the opportunity to aid water conservation worldwide.
