'First Claim on Development Belongs to The Poor', said Mr C.K. Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change

Two companies received Outstanding Accomplishment and two companies received Commendation for Significant Achievement in Corporate Excellence; four companies recognised for Excellence in Environment Management; five take home Commendation for Significant Achievement in Environment Management; six companies got Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility; four awarded Commendation for Significant Achievement in Corporate Social Responsibility; and one company won Commendation for Significant Achievement in Biodiversity.

NEW DELHI, 12 DECEMBER 2017: Mr C.K. Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, recognised the winners for Excellence in Sustainable Business at a special presentation of CII-ITC Sustainability Awards in New Delhi on 12 December 2017.

These Awards are a part of CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development’s continued efforts to create awareness, promote policy and practices, and create capacity to mainstream sustainability practices. Not only do the Awards help reward exemplary enterprises for their pioneering efforts, but these recognitions also help create beacons of inspiration for others to follow.

The ceremony was attended by some of the most illustrious and distinguished CEOs, Jury and Assessors who came to receive their Awards under various categories.

Mr C.K. Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, highlighted that at the forefront of Ministry’s agenda  lies the creation of renewed policy frameworks that enable sustainable and inclusive development a success. He said that climate change is not only about environment but also about human existence and this must be put up at the forefront. With this, he urged all the sectors of government to join hands and save Delhi from the possible embarrassment of air pollution in coming October-November 2018.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Shyam Saran, Jury Chair, CII-ITC Sustainability Awards, said that these awards indicate that time has come to integrate ecological sustainability into mainstream business. He added that records of companies have risen with the bars and standards of CII-ITC Sustainability Awards going up and becoming increasingly credible.

Mr Sanjiv Puri, CEO and Executive Director, ITC Limited, in his address stressed on the fact that issue of livelihood is the single-most challenge that the country faces today and there is a need for greater appreciation and greater commitment to address these challenges. Mr Puri emphasised on a new growth model that calls for extreme competitiveness, one that nourishes environment and creates responsible sustainable development. 

Ms Seema Arora, Deputy Director General, Confederation of Indian Industry, highlighted that sustainability is not just about commercial success but also about the future of society. She mentioned that with the breadth and depth of SDGs and industry being the backbone of Indian economy, businesses need to transform the future towards which CESD has already taken a leap forward. 

This year, 105 applicants underwent a rigorous evaluation process that includes on-site assessment by a peer team of CII-certified sustainability assessors, who spent approximately 1,000 man-hours per application over a period of six months. The final shortlist of winning applicants was validated by a pre-eminent jury comprising leaders from government, civil society and academia.
