Radical Changes are Needed in the Indian medical system-Dr Jitendra Singh
Dec 14, 2017

Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, PMO Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space,  said that radical changes have to be brought about in the medical system to cater to different regions having varying health challenges and profiles.

While addressing the 14th Health Summit organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in the capital today, Dr Singh said that regions like North East having high incidence of cancer should have special modules to address health problems.  Already, a beginning has been made in this direction.  More doctors are trained and hospitals are equipped to treat the patients. A helicopter based OPD has been operative in the region to reach out to far-flung areas which are cut off from the mainstream. Similar facilities can be extended to other regions where health infrastructure has not reached adequately.

The Minister said that it is the right time to think about motivating good talent in the medical profession to work in the Government hospitals like the AIIMS that are going to be set up in different parts of the country. Incentivising the salary structure, better  facilities and career growth can induce  them to work in areas where the comforts  are limited compared to metros like Delhi and Mumbai.

Dr Singh while referring to the growing trust  deficit between the medical service provider and the patients said ‘these developments are mostly due to change in the spectrum of diseases.  India is facing the burden of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, cancer etc.  The treatment span for communicable diseases is short and less costly while non-communicable treatment is prompt and costly,” he added. Increased cost of treatment for more years could be a cause for discontent for patients.

The Minister exhorted the industry to think about strengthening their communication with the patients and society to make them understand the nuances of medical treatment and the cost structure.  “It would be a worthwhile exercise if slots are taken in the media for publicizing various diseases, treatment profiles and cost structures,” he added.
