Oct 05, 2018

The second day of the Education Summit, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) saw 10 institutes winning the AICTE-CII Survey awards for 2018. Congratulating the winners on their exceptional work with industry, Secretary, Higher Education, Mr R Subrahmanyam said, “Winners of the survey deserve all the applause they got.” He highlighted the four-pillars of research which the government is building on creating. These pillars will include applied research with industry, research in basic science, research in social science and research with international organisations.

Mr Subrahmanyam was the chief guest in the opening session and he spoke at length about government initiatives to promote excellence in higher education. Minister for HRD, Mr Prakash Javadekar, sent a video message at the summit. He appreciated the efforts of AICTE and CII in mapping the industry linkages of technical institutes and promised to encourage premier institutions such as IITs, NITs and IIMs to participate in it in future.

Chairman, AICTE, Prof Anil Sahasrabudhe, who joined the Secretary in giving away the awards to winners of the Survey, said that the work done by these institutes was an example for others. He shared that AICTE had started a faculty training programme for six months which will be compulsory for every faculty.

Additional Secretary, University Grants Commission (UGC), Dr Pankaj Mittal spoke about the “Changing Role of Regulators”. According to her, “Regulators are like gurus or teachers who have to play the important role of guiding the students or institutions about what is the right direction to be taken. Should regulators work as facilitators or inspectors?” The answer according to her was the former. She talked about graded autonomy and its role in improving the quality of higher education.

Industry stalwarts who were present on this occasion included Mr Sunil Kant Munjal. As the Chairman of CII Education Council this year, Chairman of Hero Enterprise and as the promoter of BML Munjal University, Mr Munjal has been working actively in the area of education. He is also the Chairman of Doon School and Dayanand Medical College. Speaking on this occasion on “Creating New-age Institutions”, he emphasized that new-age institutions will have to handle the changes which are becoming a reality because of technology. If technology will take away jobs then it will also create new kinds of jobs which were unthinkable even 10 years ago, he said. “The gap between where we need to be and where we are, is significant. At the top end we have several institutes of higher learning. But at the lower level end the quality leaves much to be desired. This is an opportunity for us – having world class institutions has been our heritage. But we can’t rest on past laurels. We need that quality today,” he said.

Dr BVR Mohan Reddy, who is the Chairman of IIT Hyderabad in addition to being the Chairman of CII Education Council and Chairman of Cyient, said on this occasion, “The need for involvement for private sector in education cannot be overstressed. Enormous amount of change is already visible. Students are also far different from what they used to be. Their attention span has significantly come down from what it used to be. One big challenge for private sector is to live up to the challenge which is posed by large numbers.” He highlighted the role of technology and the disruptions that it is bringing and how it will impact the way learning was happening.
