Health is not only a basic human right, but also a key precondition to economic development. CII has worked to place the issue of public health on every corporate boardroom agenda. The focus of attention is on prevention of communicable diseases, promotion of healthy workplace conditions, raising nutrition levels among women and children, among others. (a) HIV/AIDS Prevention: To prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and to care for those affected by it, CII has framed an HIV/AIDS code for industry which includes the development of a workplace policy and protocols for care, support and treatment services. This includes training of doctors and paramedics in HIV medicine, setting up of counseling help lines, developing a biometric Health Smart Card, partnerships with international agencies and formation of a Global Business Coalitions for sharing of preventive best practices on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM). CII has worked to promote public-private partnerships for setting up corporate owned / managed anti-retroviral therapy (ART) centres. The main ones are: ACC at Wadi, Karnataka; Ballarpur Industries at Chandrapur, Maharashtra; Godrej and Boyce Manufacturing at Vikhroli, Mumbai; Bajaj Auto in Pimpri, Pune; Reliance Industries in Patalganga, Maharashtra; and ACC with Christian Medical College (CMC) at Vellore, Tamil Nadu. Further, CII in a joint study with the World Bank Institute has highlighted the capacity of the IT industry to prevent the young and vulnerable populations from contracting HIV/AIDS and in reducing the social stigma attached to the affected people (b) Tuberculosis Control CII in partnership with Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) has facilitated the setting up of DOTS centres in the PPP mode. Companies like Reliance Industries Limited, Jubilant Organosys, L&T, Becton Dickinson, Hindalco, NTPC and others have pro-actively supported this initiative.

Key Initiatives / Information

Through the Hindu “Business Line” article the author, Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General (CII), chronicles the development and evolution of the Indian industry in the post 1991 liberalisation era. The author dwells upon how companies had to fight for their survival in the post reforms scenario after the Indian industry was thrown open to competition from abroad after many decades of protection. He further elucidates the theme of corporate social responsibility suggesting that it is only now that industry is in a position to give back to society. Mention is also made of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and its key role in supporting the reform process and improving competitiveness. The author concludes by making a case for heightened private participation in government led interventions for wider, broad based reforms.

The travails of the global economy appear to be still not behind us, despite gradual recovery during 2010 from the worst global economic conditions since World War II. Continued fiscal and debt burdens vitiate the recovery process, imparting a degree of fragility and uncertainty to global economic conditions. The world needs a new source of growth and stability, and India, a rapidly growing economy with strong internal demand, offers a new opportunity. India remained relatively untrammeled by the developments in the Eurozone and reverted to close to 9% GDP growth rates in 2010. Growth was broad-based across all sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing and services. Public commitment to calibrated exit from expansionary fiscal policy and continued corporate and household confidence have helped sustain a virtuous growth cycle. The resurgence of the rural economy and intensified infrastructure mission further strengthened the foundations for medium-term growth propensities.
