Urban Development

Cities and towns are hubs of national production and consumption. However, our cities are crumbling under growing pressure, affecting the quality of life of the residents, and posing serious challenges to environment, sustainability, and consequently to the prospects of growth and development of the country. According to estimates, the Urban Development sector in India requires an investment of US$ 175 billion. A major part of it is for Urban Transport, Water & Sanitation. While the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), launched by the Government of India, has substantially enhanced the availability of finance for urban infrastructure, there is a need for long-term urban governance reforms and a strong public-private-partnership to bring about widespread changes in the way our cities are governed and managed today. The Confederation of Indian Industry works to promote PPP in urban infrastructure. We work in partnership with the Centre,State and local governments to ensure effective implementation and compliance of the 74th Amendment. CII has also identified 'Intelligent Cities' as a key focus area.

First communication from the CII President to all members after assuming the office of CII, President.

The travails of the global economy appear to be still not behind us, despite gradual recovery during 2010 from the worst global economic conditions since World War II. Continued fiscal and debt burdens vitiate the recovery process, imparting a degree of fragility and uncertainty to global economic conditions. The world needs a new source of growth and stability, and India, a rapidly growing economy with strong internal demand, offers a new opportunity. India remained relatively untrammeled by the developments in the Eurozone and reverted to close to 9% GDP growth rates in 2010. Growth was broad-based across all sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing and services. Public commitment to calibrated exit from expansionary fiscal policy and continued corporate and household confidence have helped sustain a virtuous growth cycle. The resurgence of the rural economy and intensified infrastructure mission further strengthened the foundations for medium-term growth propensities.

A high level Indian delegation undertook a Mission to the European Cities of Leuven, Brussels, Lille and Paris from the 3rd to the 9th of October followed by the 4th EuroIndia City Summit on Reinventing Dynamic and Sustainable Cities at Halle (Germany) from 10th to 12th October, 2010.
