Uttar Pradesh, located in northern India, is the country’s most populous state. Spread across nearly 240,000 sq. km, the state accounts for about 7.3% of India’s geographical area and contributes approximately 9% to the national gross domestic product as of 2024-25. With a Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of approximately INR 2,97,822,351 (lakhs) in FY 2024-25, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has embarked on an ambitious mission to become a USD 1 trillion economy within the next five years. The state contributes significantly to India’s MSME ecosystem with more than 90 lakh MSME units and is emerging as a major hub for electronics manufacturing, defence production, food processing, textiles, renewable energy, EV manufacturing, and logistics. Traditionally an agrarian economy, Uttar Pradesh remains one of India’s leading producers of wheat, sugarcane, milk, potatoes, rice, and food grains. Agriculture and allied sectors continue to employ a large share of the workforce and contribute 26.82 per cent to the state’s gross state value added (GSVA). At the same time, the state has rapidly diversified into manufacturing and services (contributing 25.91 per cent and 47.25 per cent respectively) through strong policy reforms, infrastructure expansion, and industrial investments. A major strategic initiative driving industrial growth in the state is the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, one of India’s flagship defence manufacturing corridors under the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. The corridor spans key nodes including Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, Aligarh, Agra, and Chitrakoot, attracting investments in aerospace, defence equipment, ammunition, drones, and advanced manufacturing. The corridor is expected to strengthen indigenous defence production, promote MSME participation, generate large-scale employment, and position Uttar Pradesh as a leading defence manufacturing hub in India. The state’s industrial growth has been supported by transformative infrastructure projects including the Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Ganga and Yamuna Expressways dedicated freight corridors, expanding metro connectivity, and multiple international airports including Jewar International Airport, expected to become one of Asia’s largest airports. The services sector contributes nearly half of the state’s economy and continues to grow rapidly in IT & ITES, tourism, healthcare, education, banking, fintech, retail, logistics, and digital services.
