Goa is located on the Konkan Coast, 600 kms to the south of Mumbai. The state has an area of 3,702 sq kms. Goa has a well-developed social, physical and industrial infrastructure and virtual connectivity. It has an international airport that is in line with its importance as a globally-recognised leisure destination. A second greenfield international airport is being developed in Mopa, Goa with an annual capacity of 30 million passengers by phase IV. The state also has a strong port infrastructure. The state has an established base for the pharmaceuticals industry and is an emerging destination for knowledge-based industries such as biotechnology and IT.
The state government under the ‘Make in India’ umbrella, is helping set up industries that are non-polluting and employment-oriented. The thrust areas identified by government for greenfield investments include knowledge-based industry and R&D centres, pharmaceuticals & bio-technology, integrated educational hubs, tourism, light engineering, aviation, aerospace and defence, information technology: research, hardware and electronics, agro-based and food processing industries and shipbuilding.
As per 2011 census, average density of population of Goa was 394 persons per sq km, which is higher than the national average of 382. The literacy rate of Goa is 88.70%. The last five decades' gender literacy gap shows a declining trend.
Goa's economic growth is driven by the strong performance of sectors such as fishing, agriculture, tourism, and pharmaceuticals. At current prices, Goa’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) was Rs 815.02 billion (US$ 11.14 billion) in 2020-21. Its per capita Net State Domestic Product is one of the highest in India. Tourism is a major industry in Goa and it attracts domestic and foreign tourists from all over the globe. The state received 90.45 lakh tourists in the year 2020 comprising 87.63 lakh domestic and 2.82 lakh foreign tourists.
