Bihar is the twelfth largest state in terms of geographical size at 38,202 sq m and is third most populated state of India with total population of 82,998,509 (43,243,795 Male and 39,754,714 Female). Bihar lies mid-way between the humid West Bengal in the east and the sub humid Uttar Pradesh in the west which provides it with a transitional position in respect of climate, economy and culture. It is bounded by the country of Nepal to the north and by Jharkhand to the south. The Bihar plain is divided into two parts by the river Ganga which flows through the middle from west to east. Bihar has notified forest area of 6,764.14 sq. km, which is 7.1 per cent of its geographical area. Hindi and Urdu are the official languages of the state, whilst the majority of the people speak one of the Bihari languages — Angika, Bhojpuri, Magadhi or Maithili. Bihar's compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) is 11.03 per cent as against the national average of 8.49 per cent. Bihar has a total literacy rate is 47%. Total number of literates in Bihar is 3,16,75,607 which consists 2,09,78,955 Male and 1,06,96,652 Female. Patna has highest Literacy Rate of 63.82% followed by Rohtas (62.36%) and Munger (60.11%). Kishanganj has lowest Literacy Rate of 31.02% followed by Araria (34.94 %) and Katihar(35.29%).
The economy of Bihar is largely service orientated, but it also has a significant agricultural base. The state also has a small industrial sector. As of today, agriculture accounts for 35%, industry 9% and service 55% of the economy of the state.
Bihar has immense potential to attract foreign tourists. On top of that, better connectivity resulted in larger inflow of foreign tourists to the state with Buddhist tourism being the major attraction. A boom in the tourism industry was just one of the many success stories in a rising Bihar, which suddenly drew the attention of the entire country. There is a scheme named Akshar Aachal Yojana, a literacy drive which has made magnificent impact in improving the literacy scenario amongst the women in Bihar and has set an objective to convert 40 lakh illiterate women into literate within six months with the help of panchayat teachers. A couple of years ago, the state used to purchase fish seeds from West Bengal. With the intervention of the animal and fisheries department, fish seeds are today supplied locally in Madhubani and Darbhanga districts.
On the healthcare front, the Union Ministry of Health has decided to set up four composite paramedical institutes in the country and Bihar is the only state in the eastern region chosen by the Centre for the opening up of the institute which speaks volumes of the image makeover of the state in the recent few years.
Key Initiatives/ Information
CII, Bihar State Council was actively engaged in the relief and rehabilitation of 2.5 million flood affected victims of the state. CII, Bihar State Council in close partnership with the Government of Bihar identified and opened up Relief Distribution Centres at both Saharsa and Supaul districts, thereby provided direct relief to the affected victims. Lot of relief materials were distributed in affected districts like Saharsa, Araria, Battanah etc. CII, Bihar State Council created Vision 2022 in alignment with the national agenda that would trickle down to major districts of the state as “District Development Plan” which would provide a guideline for development. The following districts have been identified for the creation of DDP s, namely Patna, Katihar, Purnia, Darbhanga & Munger. CII continuously undertakes initiatives in the area of skill development. Three districts namely Saharsha, Supaul and Madhubani have been identified for skill development. CII would also join hands with Government in cluster development and capacity building. Further, CII, Bihar State Council is partnering with the Department of Labour, Government of Bihar in the modernization of the machines in the existing government owned Industrial Training Institutes. CII, Bihar State Council conducted a number of roadshows to promote the food processing sector of Bihar at Kolkata, Varanasi, Ranchi, Bangalore, Mumbai and Bhubaneswar. CII, Bihar State Council in association with Department of Labour Resources, Government of Bihar organized State Level employment fair. The mega employment fair played a vital role in generating job opportunities to qualified and skilled job seekers of the state of Bihar. On the international arena, CII, Bihar State Council organized an interaction meeting with the representative of London School of Economics to chart out a developmental roadmap of Bihar. CII, Bihar State Council prepared a “Comprehensive Development Report of Bihar” with major recommendations which were handed over to Mr. Nitish Kumar, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Bihar.
