Chhattisgarh is one of the youngest States of the Indian nation. Constituted on 1st November, 2000, Chhattisgarh is located in the heart of India, and shares its borders with six States of the country; Uttar Pradesh to the north, Jharkhand to the north-east, Orissa to the east, Madhya Pradesh to the west and north-west, Maharashtra to the south-west and Andhra Pradesh to the south-east. The geographical area of the State covers over 135,000 square kilometers and the total population in 2001 was 20,833,803 (2.08 crores1). Its population density stands at 154 persons per sq km, much lower than the all India-average of 324 persons per sq km. Population growth rate in Chhattisgarh stood at 18 per cent during 1991-2001, lower than the national growth rate of 21.3 per cent during the same period. Chhattisgarh is the richest state in terms of mineral wealth, with 28 major minerals, including diamonds, gold, iron-ore, coal, corundum, bauxite, dolomite, lime, tin and granite to name a few. It is the only state in India to have tin ore reserves. Over one-fifth of iron ore in the country is mined here and one of the best quality iron ore deposits in the world is found in Chhattisgarh. The mineral-rich state attracted investment proposals worth US $ 4.89 billion in October 2007. Construction and services in the tertiary sector registered a growth of more than 30 percent year-on-year in 2008–09. The state is the “iron and steel hub” of the country. The state has huge coal reserves at 84 per cent of India‘s coal and holds the major share of coal deposits in India, which has led to its 'power hub' status. The state offers significant opportunities for infrastructure development through private sector participation. Chhattisgarh is in advantageous position to systematically exploit the rich resources like minerals, minor forest produce, herbal, jem & jewellary, food processing & opportunities for setting up value edition downstream and allied industries by attracting investment in the state. Availability of land and knowledge workers at comparatively low cost provides opportunity to the state to attract investment. Information on markets and opportunities for investment in Chhattisgarh can also be obtained from Confederation of Indian Industry, which works with the objective of creating a symbiotic interface between industry and Government.
