Confederation of Indian Industry – Northern Region (CII NR) works to create and sustain an environment conducive to the growth of industry in the Northern India, partnering industry and government alike through advisory and consultative processes. CII Northern Region is headquartered at Chandigarh.
The CII Northern Region comprises of the eight States of Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand & Uttar Pradesh and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. It serves a membership of over 2,595 direct members from the private as well as public sectors, including SMEs and MNCs, and over 15,000 indirect members from around 69 regional and local associations.
Northern Region is the largest contributor to the National GDP. Construction; Transport, storage & communication sub sectors are amongst the fastest growing sectors in the region and are also amongst the top five contributors to the region’s GDP. Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi are the three largest economies in the region. Chandigarh, Uttarakhand and Haryana are the three fastest growing economies in the region.
State wise best performing sectors include: Chandigarh – sub sector Trade, hotels & restaurants witnessed highest growth rate in the country; Delhi – sub sector Real Estate witnessed third highest growth rate in the country; Haryana - sub sector Real Estate witnessed second highest growth rate in the country; Himachal Pradesh witnessed the third highest growth rate in agriculture amongst all states and UTs; Uttarakhand clocked the second highest growth rate in construction and third highest in manufacturing.
CII NR’s theme for the year 2009 – 10 is “Building North for Tomorrow”. The Guiding Principles for 2009 – 10 are focus on Enablement, promoting investments in the region and Partnerships. Tomorrow’s North means a region without barriers, which is more integrated; better enabled with quality infrastructure, competitiveness and governance. This would be done by greater investment, superior skills, inclusiveness & sustainability, focus on social sector like health, education and CSR.
Key Initiatives / Information
Overseas Indians are valuable members of the communities in which they reside, and by their hard work have brought high brand equity to India. While individuals have achieved outstanding positions of eminence in all walks of life, ordinary overseas Indians too have contributed significantly to nation-building in their adopted homelands.
According to Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General of the Confederation of Indian Industry, with each passing year the importance of the PBD as a forum has increased. Indeed, the PBD provides a platform where people of Indian origin not only try to know more about India but also what the Indian community is doing in their own country. “By participating in the PBD, delegates get first-hand knowledge about India’s economy and the opportunities available here,” said Mr Banerjee. Further, Mr Banerjee also stated that for the first time, the Jaipur PBD 2012 brought together a large number of persons who wanted to know how Rajasthan has become a big hub for solar energy.
Overseas Indians contribute to the Indian economy in many different ways. India receives remittances worth $50 billion annually, the highest in the world, which help Indian communities. Overseas Indians also assist Indian companies in their businesses outside India and are often managing Indian operations of multinational companies. However, they can leverage India's rapid growth by making more investments in India.
Lessons leant from the many past family disputes, is leading to many family businesses structure their personal and business assets in a manner which helps in better succession planning minimizing future disputes whilst creating enough opportunities to grow, raise money and create value. Questions are many, should the businesses be held through a trust, company, partnership firm, LLPS. Where should these entities be registered, where should the group IPs and brands be housed- in operating companies or separate companies, what should be the ideal structure - should we have holding companies, trading companies or IPR companies, should these companies be bucketed together or separately and many more strategic issues. Further, the recently introduced LLP provisions and the recent amendment to the FDI norms permitting foreign investment in LLPS provides a opportunity worth exploring for doing businesses through LLPS ring fencing liability whilst better planning taxes. Without doubt, setting up a completely new set up for family businesses or LLPS is relatively easy, transitioning an existing structure into a desired structure/ LLPs has a plethora of tax, commercial and regulatory consideration. This session will explore the possible structuring opportunities and the key challenges to be addressed in this exciting area.

76th CII Northern Region Business Outlook Survey is a quarterly study conducted to gauge the sentiment in the economy. Earlier, the survey was conducted bi-annually, but from the 74th Survey onwards the study is conducted on a quarterly basis in order to get a more frequent indicator of business sentiment. The current survey gives an outlook on business sentiments for the first quarter of 2011-12 as compared to the last quarter of 2010-11.

National Foundation for Corporate Governance (NFCG) has been established by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs in partnership with CII, ICSI, ICAI, ICWAI and NSE to function as the National Apex platform for promotion of good Corporate Governance (CG) practices in India.
On 6 August 2010, the LEH CLOUDBURST brought about vast devastation. Hundreds of lives were lost, swept away and buried in mud, over 1300 houses destroyed; More than 40 percent farmland rendered infertile putting thousands of survivors in relief camps.
CII responded by immediately swinging into action. Obstacles were slashed to permit purchases of emergency supplies and equipment, and mobilisation of other resources with minimum delay.
Co-operative arrangements between government and private organisations were made to coordinate the delivery of relief supplies. With its prior experience in relief efforts at various places, CII formulated a 3-pronged strategy to support Leh in this hour of crisis.
India’s ICTE hardware manufacturing sector has immense potential driven by the
explosive growth in electronics and IT consumption. Having identified these as thrust
areas, Government of India has undertaken various initiatives, with R&D promotion
being one of them. Various departments of the Government have been individually
pioneering initiatives aimed at improving indigenous manufacturing through promotion
of R&D. Department of Information Technology (DIT), being the nodal Government
body for the ICTE sector, has been initiating programs aimed at improving the R&D
ecosystem and fostering innovation in the country. It has recently initiated a scheme
called the “Multiplier Grants Scheme” (MGS) with the aim to encourage collaborative
R&D between industry and academic/R&D institutions for development of products and
packages.

Mr Anand Sharma, Hon’ble Minister for Commerce & Industry, Government of India, virtually inaugurated the National Skill Development Centre on 8th May 2010. The Skill Development Centre being established by CII Northern Region, in association with Indian Institute of Skill Development in Parwanoo, Himachal Pradesh with an estimated investment of around 1.00 crore.
The report notes various development taking place in India towards the development of energy markets in general and energy derivatives market in particular. It discusses several existing barriers that have been impeding further growth of energy markets in the country. In light of the existing barriers, the report proposes way forward for the development of robust markets in the energy industries.
Climate change is at the centre stage of global discussions. The warming of the climate
system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean sea level. Climate change is undoubtedly one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats, our planet faces today. It impacts all countries, but is particularly severe for developing countries like India, given their vulnerabilities, inadequate means and limited capacities to adapt to its effects.
‘Producer gas’ is produced through the process of gasification - an efficient method of extracting heat from biomass. Natural gas, diesel or furnace oil can be replaced by producer gas for making steam in order to generate electricity and heat for industries.

CII Awards & Recognitions
The workskills competition is conducted at the Regional level first, followed by the National Competitions, to encourage workers in the industry by recognising excellence in skill through organised competitions in select trades.
The QC Circle Competition, an annual feature since 1986, is the culmination of the State, Regional and National conventions that take place throughout the year as part of CII’s continuous efforts to strengthen the Quality movement in India.

The CII Cotton Awards were instituted by CII. Vardhman & few other textile companies supported the silver salvars/mementos which were presented to the selected farmers for achieving high yield in cotton production alongwith some cash awards. The jury comprised of a few technical people from industry and PAU.
As globalization pervades all facets of our life, there is a vital need for the education sector to keep pace with the changes sweeping across the environment. In today's dynamic world and demanding pedagogies; to say that teaching is one of the most important jobs would not be wrong. Teachers not only spread knowledge but also contribute to the society at large as they are the reason behind most of the people, who lead their countries to new developments. With education, we can achieve all that we want and can make new things and resources and meet the growing needs but it is a teacher who is behind imparting the education to the people.
The Workskills competition was initiated by CII on the lines of the Skills Olympics organised by the industry in Europe as a means of promoting vocational training in industrial skills. The first CII Workskills was held in 1989 at the Advanced Training Institute, Dasnagar, Howrah. 205 workers from the Indian Industry participated in this event. In view of the overwhelming response received in the first Workskills, CII has institutionalised this competition as a major event for the industrial work force, held every year at the Regional and National levels.
The competition is being held in nine trades viz. Electrician, Machinist (Miller), Welder, Fitter, Turner, Industrial Electronics, Tool & Die Maker, Instrument Mechanic and COPA (Computer Operator cum Processing Assistant) in two categories - upto 22 years of age and above 22 years of age. The objectives of the competition are - to encourage workers in the industry by providing recognition for individual merit and excellence in skills through organised competition in selected trades and to upgrade the standards and status of vocational trades and promote skills development programmes in the industry.
