Assam is the gateway to the North East India. Its topography, rich biodiversity, forest cover and fertile land etc., make Assam a bright candidate for a global agro-processing and tourist destination. The GSDP at current prices for 2014-15 stood at Rs 198098 crores with a growth rate of 11.45 per cent over previous year.
Agriculture makes a significant contribution to its domestic sectors accounting for more than a third of Assam’s income. Of a population of 267 million in Assam, 69% constitute the working force. Tea and oil & gas are two predominant industries of Assam which accounts for about 15% of the country’s crude oil output and 50% of India’s total on-shore production of natural gases which may be used for production of fertilizers, electricity, petrochemicals and fuel in the industrial sector. Energy, bamboo, handloom and handicraft are the other promising sectors. Assam has 7 Integrated Infrastructure Development Centres (IIDC), 2 Industrial Growth Centres (IGC), 1 Export Promotional Industrial Park (EPIP), 5 Industrial Parks and 9 Industrial Areas. Assam Industrial Development Corporation Limited (AIDC) has been incorporated in 1965 and its main objective is to promote industries or entrepreneurs. The Government is facilitating the industrialization in the state with enabling policies.
