3rd CII National HR Conclave 2012

a) We need people to develop people, if India is to achieve the high levels of growth required for sustainable and inclusive development, stated Mr Arun Maira, Member, Planning Commission of India, at CII’s National HR Conclave 2012 in New Delhi today. A talented, skilled, and motivated workforce creates value not only for the organization, but also the nation, he said. The annual conclave, third in the series, explored the role of HR in talent management, and in driving greater growth and governance. 

b) Economic growth has to be fuelled by the manufacturing sector, which can create the jobs our growing population requires, he said, stressing that the challenge for HR professionals today is to encompass all levels of the organization, and reach out and relate to all employees. Leadership needs to be developed and nurtured right from the shop floor to the executive suites, he said, stating that every employee should be given the opportunity to do meaningful work. HR should be done with the heart, from the heart, he said, urging HR professionals to establish the ‘emotional’ connection to build committed and motivated teams. 

c) The prestigious CII HR Excellence Awards, presented on the occasion, saw Tata Steel Ltd bag the Prize for Leadership in HR Excellence. Seven  companies were awarded for ‘Significant Achievement in HR Excellence’ - namely, Coromandel International Ltd, EID Parry India Ltd. ITC Ltd, Rane Group, Saint Gobain Glass India, Tata Sponge Iron Ltd and Toyota Kirloskar Motor P Ltd. As many as 18 companies wererecognized for their ‘Strong Commitment to HR Excellence.’ 

d) Technology and communication have radically transformed the role of HR in talent management, observed Mr S Gopalakrishnan, President-Designate CII, and Co-Founder and Executive Co-Chairman, Infosys Technologies Ltd. Today, people and organizations have to continuously upgrade and update their skills and learnings to remain relevant, and the responsibility of HR is to facilitate this continuous improvement, he said. Strategic investment into employees needs to be built into the business model of the organization to create opportunities for leadership development at all levels, he said, urging HR professionals to create avenues for employees to develop leadership qualities and people skills in social spaces beyond the workplace. 

e) Earlier, Mr HM Nerurkar, Chairman, CII National Committee on HR, and Managing Director, Tata Steel Ltd, talked about the role and responsibility of leadership in setting the core values and ethics to build a sustainable organization. 

f) The day long annual conclave explored issues related to leadership development and succession planning, next generation talent management, designing the right rewards package, HR service delivery modules, and  return on talent investments, through candid panel discussions engaging top HR professionals from organizations across the spectrum.

The 3rd CII National HR Conclave 2012, with a focus on Future of Talent Management – Driving Greater Growth & Governance was organized by CII on 4 October 2012 at New Delhi.  

The annual conclave, third in the series, explored the role of HR in talent management, and in driving greater growth and governance. 

The 3rd CII National HR Excellence Award 2012 process culminated in presentation of prizes to the winners at the the conclave. 

With greater emphasis on talent management and increasing competition for key talent what are employers doing to reshape their talent programs to meet demands of a volatile market and continue to drive sustainable business growth? What are the leading priorities in managing talent? What role can HR play to steer good governance practices? 

Some of the key themes under discussion included: 

  • Building a high-impact leadership organization
  • Next Generation Talent Management
  • Designing the right rewards package
  • HR Analytics drive return on talent investments 

The focus was on bringing to the fore new and innovative thoughts, ideas, experiences and case studies with a special focus on the role of HR and the top managements in driving these processes.  The Conclave was aimed to set up a platform for sharing of perspectives and experiences on the subject amongst a large cross section of representatives from business and industry as well as society at large.
