Africa Seminar Series- The Land of Unexplored Potential: Trade and Investment Opportunities of Indian Companies

Africa is emerging  as an investment destination for a number of reasons, including its abundant natural resources, improving economic indicators and evidence of maturing political stability. Growth in the population, alongside a rise in consumption, has been a significant driver in the continent’s growth story.

The continent has become the second most attractive investment destination in the world – ranking just behind North investors are looking beyond the more established markets of South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya. According to some latest reports, five out of the top ten fastest growing economies in the world is from Africa. Foreign direct investment (FDI) in the region has hit a record $60 billion, five times its 2000 level. Intra-African investment is also on the rise, creating a virtuous circle that encourages greater foreign investment.Global companies have begun to enlarge their African footprint by expanding into the continent. India has business interest and investment in Africa since very long, largely driven by small and medium enterprises and traders, but the recent wave of FDI from India to Africa is driven by the bigger Indian companies.

With an objective to highlight the immense potential Africa offers for the Indian companies, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) organised a Seminar on 24th July 2015 at Pune.

The seminar disseminated knowledge of the tremendous potential that Africa has and provide interaction between the representatives from African Missions, towards resolution of queries on business and investment policies. The session included presentations on trade and investment opportunities in sectors such as Manufacturing, Infrastructure, Agriculture & Allied Services, Pharmaceutical & Healthcare, Consumer Goods, IT Services, etc. There was also information dispersal regarding setting up operations in Africa, support assistance provided by the Government of India, financing options for doing business in Africa and experience sharing by Indian companies doing business with Africa.

The seminar provided a unique platform to interact with the heads of missions of various African countries.
