CII, The Big Picture 2013
HighLights

·        The Media and Entertainment (M&E) industry, despite the economic slowdown, has registered growth and there is tremendous possibility for further growth said Mr Manish Tewari, Minister  of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India in his inaugural address at the CII Big Picture Summit 2013 – Embracing Innovation in Media. Complimenting CII for its optimism in setting a target of USD 100 billion for the industry, he spoke of the opportunity that the sector presents in terms of innovation in content and non-content areas, adding that the Government would partner industry to put into place a system to see that the vision of USD 100 billion is translated into reality. He said industry must explore how new avenues and technologies such as mobile telephony can be used to grow the sector, while emphasizing that the Government would look to facilitate innovation and expansion.

·        Sounding an optimistic note, Mr Ronnie Screwvala, MD, Walt Disney, India, in the keynote address said that although there have been challenges and a sense of gloom, there has been a fair amount of progress as well, especially in the movie industry, which has flourished. The M&E industry, he said, is seen as an industry of ‘high impact’ with the ability to bring about noteworthy transformation. Therefore, he felt that the time is right for the M&E industry, Government and other stakeholders to take time to deliberate upon the challenging issues that the industry faces such as dependency on advertising, inconsistent regulation, the need and ability to attract the best talent, unanimity and long-term thinking and then come up with a roadmap that will help the industry achieve the target of USD 100 billion.

·        Delivering the theme address, Mr Uday Shankar, CEO, Star India, said that the theme ‘Embracing Innovation in Media’ was very appropriate given the current turbulence in the Indian economy. He said openness to new ideas, capital and talent would unleash a fresh wave of growth, just as it did in the 1990s, when economic reforms ushered in a fresh wave of growth for the Indian economy. He stressed that no renewal can happen, either in the economy or the M&E industry, unless it was open to new ideas. While there has been tremendous growth – from 3,000 newspapers in 1991 to 80,000 today, from one state-run broadcaster to over 800 channels today, a web of policies and regulations are hampering this growth. He focused on two challenges – of price controls and regulations by way of restrictions on freedom of speech – that together are stifling innovation in the industry. He strongly advocated the need for openness in ideas and consistency in regulation to enable companies to innovate to create new products and find new markets.

·        Mr Amit Khanna, Past Chairman, CII National Committee on Media & Entertainment and film maker, writer and media expert said the USD 100 billion target was achievable and laid stress on the need to innovate in content and strategy and widen our horizons to cater to a global audience.

·        Earlier, in his welcome remarks, Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII, spoke of the tremendous ‘soft power’ of the industry to bring about innumerable benefits to the Indian economy.

·        A CII-PriceWaterhouse Coopers report on the M&E industry, titled ‘India Entertainment and Media Outlook 2013’ was also released on the occasion by Minister Manish Tewari.
