8th India Innovation Summit 2012 - "India Innovates for the World"
HighLights

a)   Mr Pankaj Jhunjha, General Manager – Design, Tata Motors Ltd, said, “Car itself is not a great innovation. It is the newer version of a buggy. India is sixth largest producer of motor vehicles and 5th largest car manufacturing country. We are already losing to China. India will be in number 3 position, if we put efforts. Primary considerations for design innovation are need satisfaction, value proposition, style statement, and brand language. Secondary considerations are fashion trends, usability and interface, Technology expectations, manufacturability, quality, cost and investment.”

b)       Mr Shekar Viswanathan, Deputy Managing Director (Commercial), Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd, said, “ETIOS was born out of innovation exclusively for Indian market. When we set up shop in India in 1997, we introduced cars, which were already moving well in other countries. To develop a car outside Japan was a challenge for us. Affordable price, best fuel efficiency, smart product, safety, eco-friendly and reliability are the issues for which we innovated.”

c)      Mr Subu Goparaju, Senior Vice President, Head-Infosys Labs & Product R&D, Infosys Limited, said, “ CII is crusading for innovation and partnered with Government of India to create Global Innovation and Technology Alliance (GITA). Whatever we think under GITA, the value of raw materials should not be more than 30 to 40% so that the rest is value addition.”

d)     Prof. Pankaj Chandra, Director, IIM Bangalore, said, “As long as we focus only on software and think hardware is the job of US, we will never be able to solve our problems. India’s performance in infant mortality, life expectancy, learning skills, life balance and personal health is very poor and there is scope for great innovations in these areas.”

e)      Prof S Sadagopan, Director, IIIT – Bangalore, said, “Internet technology is exploding, but issues like Privacy, security, and access were not addressed well. Bangalore is going to become innovation capital of the world and it can find solutions to challenges faced by India as well as the world.”

f)        Dr Sudeshna Adak, R&D Manager-Medical Diagnostics Discovery, GE Healthcare, said, “It is time to personalize healthcare with the help of genomics. Cardiovascular diseases account for a quarter of deaths for 25-69 age groups and they are one of the top 5 causes of death in India.”

g)      Dr Lalitesh Katragadda, Country Head - India Products, Google, said, “Innovation, Vision, and Revolution can address many global issues. Any invention should touch the lives of millions of people and I myself led three such innovations. Google adsense revolutionized web publishing, when it was on the verge of dying. In the next ten years information web reaches all of us.”

h)      Mr Vijaya Kumar Ivaturi, Co-Founder and Board member, India Innovation Labs, said, “Earlier, the concept of design is to conceive something which benefits you later. Rationilsm is base for design IT designer. A contrast view is to cover the flaws.”

i)        Mr Soumitro Ghosh, Director, Mathew & Ghosh Architects Pvt Ltd, said, “Idea of living in and with nature became dream for urban dwellers. In designing few corporate offices we ensured natural light to cater to most of the space. Architecture is about creating a background identity, while people use the space.”

j)         Mr K Ramakrishnan , President – Marketing, Café Coffee Day Group, said, “ Without contraries, there is no progress. CCD offers you bean to cup model. If you want to build a concept, you need to take a stand. Earlier Internet was the center of the business and selling drinks around that. That concept failed as Internet café’s mushroomed everywhere. Then we made coffee as center of business, and subsequently conversation as centre of business. Purpose, pick, pilot, and perpetrate are our 4Ps.”

k)       Mr Ramanujam Sridhar, Founder CEO, brand-comm, said, “Brands today are very powerful wealth creators of the world. Successful brands are innovative and different. Brands are constantly trying to differentiate themselves. Brands try to do things differently.”

l)        Mr Karan Anand, Head – Relationships, Cox and Kings Limited, said, “Marketing has changed the face of Indian tourism. Marketing India for welcoming foreign tourists was very challenging. After seeing the success of ‘God’s own country” slogan of Kerala, Government of India started “Incredible India” campaign.

m)      Mr Sundi Natarajan, Indian Angel Network (IAN), said, “A typical VC/ Angel network gets about 300 companies every quarter. Only 1 in 100 gets angel funding. Incubation and accelerator type of funding is catching up. Investors look for team, technology, and traction.”

n)        The eighth India Innovation Summit 2012 ended on a high note with the announcement of dates for the night edition. Mr Kris Gopalakrishnan, President Designate CII & Chairman, 8th India Innovation Summit & Executive Co-Chairman, Infosys Limited, announced that next Summit will be held on August 8-9, 2013.

o)       Mr Kris Gopalakrishnan, said, “Networking, sharing thoughts, and spreading the word is important to make the future innovation summits even better. Next year session will start with a work shop in which practitioners teach the tools and methods. In earlier summits there was a suggestion to sustain throughout year. So we started innovation forum that meets once in two months in IIM Bangalore. If we want to increase the number of innovations from India, we have to sustain curiosity. We are thinking of doing an event for children as an outcome of the summit.”

p)       Two young innovators presented their success stories at the final session of the second day of the summit. Mr Vivek Sahadevan Nair, Founder & CEO, Damascus Fortune Pvt Ltd narrated his experience of innovating low cost carbon nano tubes, for which he filed the patent. His technology ‘Fluetubes’ converts industrial and automotive emissions into carbon nano-filaments. Mr Nair said, “ With our very raw model, we can reduce carbon emissions and convert them into carbon nano tubes. As we also reduce NOx and SOx emissions, we want to contribute to clean environment.”

q)      Mr Deepak Ravindran, Founder & CEO, Innoz Technologies, is another innovator who offers Internet to the people via SMS. He said, “If India wants to be a start up country, we need a success story to sell to the world. Mentorship is another important for start ups. I created a small angel fund to encourage other young innovators like me.”

r)         Mr Vijaya Kumar Ivaturi (IVK), Co-Founder and Board member, India Innovation Labs, said, “Start up as a career is an acceptable term in the recent times. What is new for younger generation is often technology. These start ups can connect India and Bharat.”

Description

India innovates for the world" is the theme of 8th India Innovation Summit and this topic is driven by the latest trends in the innovation domain where nations like India are gaining importance as a source for innovative products and services for the world.

The growth and success of India as a growing market has attracted international & domestic corporations to innovate for this region. This change in paradigm resulted in a vibrant ecosystem for India led designs and solutions delivered by different sectors like BFSI, Automotive, Healthcare, Education, Energy etc., & across the different phases of lifecycle like Applied research, Engineering services, Industrial design, Manufacturing and Distribution.

While local relevance and innovation continue to be the main source of India led success story, it has also become applicable to many other markets with similar needs. It is now turning into a trend where the India led innovative solutions are showcased outside of India first, and they are becoming more prominent in the global markets. It is also changing the way the social challenges are addressed in a country and resulted the rise of “For benefit” enterprises in addition to, “For Profit” enterprises. Social sector innovation has become as indispensable as the business sector innovation, and both are driven by the technology led innovations like Cloud, Mobility, Social networks, Renewable energy and Natural user interfaces.

The shift from a key country for talent supply to one of the most prominent markets for global products is the most critical aspect of the changing business environment in India. This paradigm shift created new opportunities for innovation, new sources of funding for new ideas and new markets for local products.

The changing landscape of innovation in India can be seen from an industry vertical viewpoint or life stages of the company perspective. The sheer variety and momentum across sectors and stages puts India as one of the most happening places for Innovation in the world, and it is very aptly called “Startup Nation”.

The Eighth India Innovation Summit explores the dynamic business environment mentioned above in terms of its opportunities & challenges and takes a closer look at the emergence of India innovating for the world.
