Power Plant Summit 2012
HighLights

a)       Mr Arvinder Singh Bakshi, Chairperson, Central Electricity Authority (CEA), while delivering the Chief Guest address at the inaugural session of 8th Power Plant Summit 2012 organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), said that, to improve performance it is necessary for industry to undertake processes for renovation and modernization. He also stressed on the need to implement latest technologies (including software) so that power plant units in the industry, across the country, can achieve the specified targets under the PAT scheme of the Ministry of Power.

Addressing various senior officials from the Government and power sector units Mr Bakshi mentioned that currently India is heavily reliant on coal-based energy sources and that there is a need to look at alternate energy sources to create a sustainable business environment for the power sector.

The  CEA  will  come  forward  and  help  power  sector  industries  to  review  the current standards and

help ensure energy efficiency methods are followed as per regulations, said Mr Bakshi.

b)       Dr Ajay Mathur, Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) emphasized on the need for the power sector to comply with PAT norms as it is mutually beneficent to the industry, the Government, and society as a whole.

Dr Mathur said that earlier BEE faced challenges while formulating the energy efficiency norms as there were units that were highly energy efficient and some which were way below the margin. After detailed deliberations, each unit was given a separate target based on its energy efficiency. This would bring out an overall change in the sector and contribute towards a more energy-efficient future for India, he added.

He underlined that the PAT scheme is a multi-cycle program for continual improvement and long term advantages for the power industry. He concluded his speech by saying that the CEA and BEE are conducting training sessions for the industry personnel to update themselves on the Government regulations for the power sector which would facilitate in creating sustainable and energy-efficient business environment for their units.

c)     Speaking on the topic Japan’s contribution towards sustainable growth in India power sector, Mr.Tsuneyuki Ito, Deputy Director, Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry, Japan, pointed to energy security, economy, safety, and environmental conservation as the issues currently facing the industry across the globe. To address these challenges he said Japan was availing multiple sources of energy like coal, gas, hydro, oil, and nuclear while also installing renewable energy sources like solar and wind power.

d)     While delivering the theme address on 'Continuous Performance Improvement & Achieving World-class Standards', Mr G J Deshpande, Chairman, Power Plant Summit 2012 & Executive Director- Operations, NTPC Ltd highlighted that reduction of carbon footprint and energy efficiency are an integral part of industry growth for the power sector in India. Addressing the gathering here, Mr. Deshpande emphasized that this summit will disseminate information related to energy efficiency and also share latest technological advancements in the industry towards creating a sustainable future.

e)      Mr S Raghupathy, Executive Director, CII-Godrej GBC delivered the concluding remarks.
