·     Speaking at the Conference Mr. N N Prasad, Executive Director and Chief of Staff, World Intellectual Property Organization, Geneva mentioned that each and every country has a responsibility to tackle the problem of Counterferfeiting & Piracy in an effective and coordinated manner.  At the same time, we also need a global appreciation of the problem and, possibly, a global solution.

For India, which is a member of the ‘G-20’ group of countries and is increasingly  considered as an emerging economic powerhouse.  Against this backdrop, it is extremely important and vital for India to further strengthen its resolve to deal with the menace of counterfeiting and piracy with determination. 

Referring  to the a  recent survey shared by a WIPO Member State, where it was found that eight out of ten students would not pay to download legitimate content from the Internet,Mr. Prasad mentioned that this is representative of today’s landscape of intellectual property enforcement and for building respect for IP.  He further mentioned that we need to work with consumers, the youth, entrepreneurs and the community and create more awareness on this issue. 
 

·     Giving away his keynote address Mr. Sanjeev Behari, Chief Commissioner, Central Excise & Customs, Pune mentioned that Custom Department has taken a lot of initiative on enforcement of IP. In fact in year 2012-13 alone there have been around 96 cases of seizure in IP.He further expressed his interest to organize a session on IPR for his custom officials.

·         Some of the recommendation that came out of the discussion was:

·         Creation of hotline where consumer can report on counterfeiting activity and create a database.

·         Need to create a database of Trader association in different locations/sites.

·         Focus on Capacity building.

·         Need of sufficient resource to detect counterfeits 

·         The conference saw participation of around 150 delegates.

CII organized 7th International conference on Anti-counterfeiting & Anti-piracy on 24-25 October, 2013 at Pune.

The impact and consequences of counterfeiting and piracy are far-reaching. Not only does it infringe on intellectual property rights, these goods also pose direct threat to consumer health and safety. They are an unfair competition and revenue losses for national governments and the business community. Recognizing the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR)'s vitality to sound economies and the health and safety of consumers.

To develop a better enforcement ecosystem and to protect the interest of IP owners in India, CII has been driving two major initiative- Training & Capacity development programs for enforcement bodies and International Conference on Anti-counterfeiting and anti-piracy.
