a)      CII, Mysore zone, in association with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board organised the “Sustainable Environment and Social Responsibility Summit 2012” at Infosys Ltd. in Hebbal industrial area at Mysore.

 

b)     The summit was held to “foster partnerships for action”.  Parnterships forged among business, civil society and governments will enable scaling up of promising initiatives to chart the way forward for a sustainable tomorrow, the CII, Mysore zone, said in a release.

 

c)      Vice-Chairman of the CII Mysore zone S. Nagarjan gave the introductory address, while president S. Raghunathan welcomed the guests.

 

d)      The former chairman of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board H.C. Sharat Chandra delivered the keynote address.  It was followed by presentations by experts.

 

e)     The summit was organised to focus on the need to develop plausible and convincing concepts for business sector involvement in sustainable development, and create an enabling platform for stakeholders to foster partnerships for action.  It aims at bringing about a better balance among the prerequisites for sustainable development – social equity, environment quality and economic efficiency, the release stated.

 

f)        The workable models were presented by NIE-CREST, Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM), Nathan and Nathan Associates, ACC Rane (Madras) Ltd., Jubilant Life Sciences Ltd. and Infosys Ltd.

 

g)      There were case-study presentations covering both aspects of environment and CSR apart from a panel discussion on the need for colaboration between government, industry and NGOs to increase social responsibility.

 

h)       Mr Chandra was felicitated on the occasion.

 
Description

The environmental and societal challenges faced by our country s due to growth of resource intensive industries and pollution, intensification of agriculture, urbanization, and changing consumption patterns is enormous. If the current scenario continues, the economy will neither attain the production and consumption levels of developed economies nor sustain the economic and social gains made during the last decades. The current prevailing situation calls for radical change in the way we think and act. Society along with us as one of the key stakeholders need to initiate actions that will lead to a sustainable and socially responsible society..

With this vision the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Mysore Zone organized a one day Sustainable Environment & Social Responsibility Summit 2012 on 22 December 2012 at Infosys Limited, Mysore.

The primary objective of this summit was to foster partnerships with govermenental and non-governmental,agencies for dedicated effort focusing on sustainability and social responsibility. . By sharing skills, resources of each sector and working in collaboration at local, national and international levels, such partnerships have the potential to garner constructive and innovative solutions for sustainable development. The summit also created an enabling platform for stakeholders to foster partnerships for action, and brought about a better balance among the basic prerequisites of sustainable development: social equity, environmental quality and economic efficiency.

The highlights of the Summit included workable and implemented models from notable Non-Governmental organizations such as The National Institute of Engineering- CREST, and Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement. Industry members such as Ultratech Cement, Rane(Madras)Ltd, Jubilant Life Sciences Ltd and Infosys Ltd presented Case studies on the work they around Environment & CSR. There was also be a panel discussion on issues and challenges in the sector. The invited speakers include Dr Vaman Acharya, Chairman, KSPCB and Dr H C Sharathchandra, ExChairman, KSPCB

CEOs and senior officials of companies who the decision-making authorities
in environment related activities and Corporate Social Responsibility, HR- Heads, Officers in Environment, Health & Safety, Qulaity Heads. University professors and students of environment were got an opportunity to keep abreast of latest developments in the field and initiatives taken by industries.
