Indian Aviation : Fastest growing domestic air market in the world
India’s civil aviation industry is on a high-growth trajectory, driven by government schemes, consistent increase in passengers, and investment by airlines. India’s domestic aviation market has become the third largest in the world and the Indian civil aviation market is all set to surpass UK to become the world's third largest by 2024. Perhaps most importantly, the unprecedented growth in India's aviation industry is set to create around 2.5 - 5 lakh new jobs across several sectors including airport management, operations, security, logistics, retail, medical tourism etc.
Drivers such as low-cost carriers, modernization of airports, FDI, high- tech and digital interventions, no-frills airports and a growing emphasis on regional connectivity are propelling India’s civil aviation market growth.
Passenger traffic expected to grow to 478 million fliers by 2036, requiring an investment of $45 billion
Indian carriers plan to grow their fleet size to 800 aircraft by 2020
In India, projected requirement of around 250 brownfield and green-field airports by 2020
Freight traffic on Indian airports is expected to cross 11.4 MT By 2032
Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) industry is expected to grow to $ 2 bn by 2020
India’s aviation industry is largely untapped with huge growth opportunities, considering that air travel is still expensive for majority of the country’s population, of which sizeable population of upwardly mobile middle class and non-metros have a potential to contribute to business growth in coming years. Therefore, it is critical for the industry stakeholders to engage and collaborate with the policy makers to come up with efficient and rational decisions that will shape the future of the Indian civil aviation industry.
Aviation in Gujarat
Gujarat possesses one of the largest networks of airports and airfields in the country. Gujarat has a robust civil aviation infrastructure, compared to most other states in India, it has 17 Airports of which 9 are under operational jurisdiction of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), 3 with IAF (of which 2 have civil terminals), 2 airports are owned by private players and 2 airports are at Union Territory of Daman and Diu. Gujarat Government intends to encourage private sector participation for development of aviation infrastructure at the existing State airport/ airstrips. Government of Gujarat has also selected 11 sites where there is a demand for new airports. Greenfield airports are being built in industrial areas like Ankleshwar and religious tourism destinations like Dwarka, Ambaji and Palitana.
Regional connectivity as well as tourism is set to get a major boost in Gujarat, as seaplane operations are likely to begin at four locations in the state.
Gujarat envisages opportunities in non-passenger segment viz. maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of aircrafts, air-cargo, and creation of a regional hub for airline operations, aviation training and back office activities. MROs play an essential role in the Indian aviation sector as every aircraft undergoes mandatory periodic checks ruled by the regulators. Gujarat with strategic location advantage, excellent technical educational infrastructure rich pool of engineering expertise and cheap labour cost has huge potential to be a global Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) hub in the long term.
Gujarat, being a wealthy state, has a population that will spend on activities like light aircraft flying, aerobatics, aeromodelling, ballooning, gliding, hang gliding, paragliding, parachuting/sky diving and power kites. Tourism growth offer opportunities for such sports to be started at destinations in Gujarat.
