Mysuru: Innovation is required in every sphere of life, without innovation no country will be a leader in the world said renowned scientist Bharat Ratna Professor CNR Rao.

During India Higher Education Summit – 2019 ‘Innovation in Education for a Competent Industry’ organised by Confederation of Indian Industry at Radisson Blu Hotel here on Friday, Prof. Rao delivering his key note address through Video Conference from Bengaluru said “In science and technology why is US No 1, not because of economy and military status but because of its innovation that scientists and others do in US; in fact, that is what happening in China as well. Just to promote innovation and science and technology, they are spending a lot of money which we also should do the same. We in India not doing well in Science and Technology and Innovation. Science and technology is the foundation for the future India and hence we have to support and give importance to it”.

According to me the greatest scientist of all time was Michael Faraday who had only three years of schooling. Whatever he observed he observed in a particular way. So mere schooling won’t give innovation. We have to give opportunity to schools and colleges for innovation for which we need to create right environment. In my own life when I was 11 years old, after looking at CV Raman I got inspired and that was the beginning of interest towards science. We need to create such platform for students so that just by seeing the people they get inspired and take up further. With the present school system, our present teaching is boring and apart from all this our curriculum is terrible including at IIT. What we should do to make our children to learn on their own and tell them to do something.

Make use of children who are largest in the world: There are nearly 60 to 70 million children in India, most of them in villages which is highest in the world. We need to pick talents from among them including from the remote corners of India. Children in Bengaluru don’t have interest, they are interested in making money, apart from tapping talent in urban areas we should also focus more in remote villages where there is abundance of talent among children. Apart from all this, the government should also allocate more money on education. Now they are spending just 3.5 percent of the total GDP which is very meager when compared to other countries including China who are spending in trillions. Those Governments who will spend more money on education especially to science and innovation will not be forgotten by people”

Don’t leave entirely to bureaucrat: Former Higher Education Minister BK Chandrashekar who also spoke on the occasion said “Policy makers including politicians should get reformed themselves about science and technology so that they don’t leave entirely to bureaucrat and they don’t take for any jolly ride. For long we are familiar with notion of improvisation I was wondering why we didn’t make necessary jump from improvisation to innovation. In the classroom of average institutions the classroom is often uninspiring, conversation among faculties hardly ever thought provoking. I have lost hope of any remarkable achievement in the field of education in Karnataka”. He also mentioned UGG which was set up to give grants to University without intervention of government has slowly became domestic animal and lost its independence and the centre want to replace it by National Higher Education Commission.

N Muthukumar, Immediate Past Chairman, CII Karnataka who also spoke on the occasion said “India is going to fastest growth, from position of 11 of global economy we come to sixth in last eight years. We talk about unemployment but in reality every industry is short of skills due to which there is 10 to 15 percent drop in production. We don’t have right people at right point of time. Among 100 top companies in the world, 70 of them are being headed by Indians. Though education system has improved over the years but lot need to be done”. Mr D Sudhanva, Summit Chair and MD of Excelsoft Technologies set the Theme for the Summit. Bhaskar Kalale, Chairman, CII Mysuru also briefed about higher education in India and also about the two day event which will be concluded on March 16.

Later in the day, Dr. B Suresh, Vice Chancellor of JSS University and Prof. Hemantha Kumar, Vice Chancellor of University of Mysore addressed the gathering on “Innovation in Higher Education”. Dr. Vivek Jawali, Chairman of Fortis Hospitals and Mr R Balasubramaniam, Founder and Chairman of GRAAM addressed on the need of “Changes in Policy and Education delivery infrastructure”. The Summit was attended by most of the Universities and Colleges in Karnataka and even from outside Karnataka.
