Yi Goa Earth Day

Yi Goa Chapter collaborated with Art Escape, Benaulim to commemorate Earth Day on April 22, 2011. Art Escape was selected as one of the official venues in India by the Earth Day network (www.earthday.org) to facilitate the Billion Acts of Green campaign.

The Goa Chapter of Young Indians supported the celebrations at Art Escape by providing 400 tree saplings for distribution, as part of the Yi Ten Million Tree Initiative. Yi also invited the Asst. Conservator of Forests (Margao), Mr. Ramesh Desai, to speak about the benefits of the trees that were distributed. The talk was followed by an interactive session with the audience who asked questions about forest preservation efforts in Goa.

Some of the other activities that were organized by Art Escape as part of the celebrations were as follows:

  • Eco walk around Benaulim.
  • Recycling workshop with kids using waste material to make art, other objects etc.
    Display of solar cooker, solar hot water system (handmade), house hold compost bins, garden compost system & segregation bins systems, solar lamps & methods of reducing consumption of energy.
  • Talk, presentation & sharing of ideas on simple solutions to waste management systems, By Clinton Vaz. www.recycl.in
  • Snake awareness presentation done by Suhail and Tarika Kiran On snakes found in Goa, How do identify venomus from non venomous.
  • “Creatures of the Earth” a play by Hartman D’souza, focusing on the mining issues of GOA & photography exhibition on the mines of Goa.
    Presentation on "Why we should segregate garbage & methods of recycling wet & dry garbage"
  • Film Screenings, including "Environment", "Dirt", & "The Garbage Trap"

Approximately 60 participants, including 15 underprivileged children from slums areas in Margao, benefited from the activities commemorating Earth Day.
