Entrepreneurship Conclave

Yi Hyderabad Chapter & CII Andhra Pradesh organized a one day Entrepreneurship Conclave focusing on Entrepreneurship in India – A Blueprint for inclusive growth.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Mr. Nrupender Rao, Executive Chairman, Pennar Industries Ltd, in his inaugural address, pointed out that the system must protect the young and energetic entrepreneurs by making the required changes in the economic and legal dimensions. “If an entrepreneur fails in his first venture, he must be able to try his new ideas and ventures”, he said.

Mr. Rao shared his experience as an entrepreneur and emphasized on the need for positive thinking and perseverance for any business to succeed and sustain. “The present age is so fast that an entrepreneur must be always watchful to sustain ones business”, he said.

Mr. Rao expressed the need for having dreams and holding on those dreams, which is a fundamental requirement for any entrepreneur. “To take your dreams forward you must have self confidence, without which you cannot be a successful entrepreneur”, he said.  

Mr. Rao also emphasized on the need for encouraging dalit entrepreneurship and appreciated CII’s efforts in this regard. “Entrepreneurship is still restricted to select communities in India and there is a need to encourage young people from other communities also to become entrepreneurs.

Mr. Srini Raju, Co-founder & Chairman, Peepul Capital, in his keynote address, pointed out that entrepreneurship can be nurtured. “Many people have great ideas but are bunged by mental and financial restrictions and such people can be nurtured to become successful entrepreneurs”, he said.

Mr. Raju talked about his experiences in financing various projects and expressed the need for have larger vision to generate greater employment and contributing to the society. In this regard, he referred to the Chinese experience. “In my understanding inclusive growth is all about sharing the profits of the ventures equitably and the businessman must have the mindset to have a larger vision to share the profits and create a base for larger number of people”, he said.

Mr. Raju also talked about various categories of entrepreneurs and emphasized the need for creating an enabling environment to encourage, protect and sustain the business ventures. “There are various categories of entrepreneurship – some are born with business instinct, some are professional entrepreneurs, some are the spouses of already established entrepreneurs and a there are also a new kind of entrepreneurs who are mostly in the technology domain, where they wanted to establish new businesses just after their education”, he said.

Mr. Raju also talked about the need for changes in curriculum where certain emphasis must also be given to encourage entrepreneurship education, in addition to the major technical subject. “We are working with IIT and IIIT to create minor subject on entrepreneurship in addition to the major technical discipline, so that once they come out of education system, they will have the required mental framework to become a successful entrepreneur. Also we must have a realistic way of thinking before planning to start a venture”.  

Mr. Shakti Sagar, Past Chairman, CII Andhra Pradesh & Managing Director, ADP Pvt. Ltd., in his special address talked about the need for encouraging corporate social entrepreneurship, which will benefit society at large. “There is a need to encourage those who are not so fortunate, which is critical for inclusive growth”, he said.

Talking about the enablors of corporate social entrepreneurship, Mr. Sagar expressed that an entrepreneur must be a leader and a leader must be an activist. “There for at least four ‘C’s which will enable corporate social entrepreneurship  - They are the Creators, Catalysts, Coordinators, and Contributors.

Mr. Sagar appreciated the present youth in the country who feel more responsible to give back to the society in the form of social responsibility. “Youth in the corporate sector feel more committed towards contributing to the society”, he said. 

Mr. B Ashok Reddy, Vice Chairman, CII Andhra Pradesh & President (Global HR & Corporate Affairs), Infotech Enterprises Ltd., in his address, emphasized on entrepreneurship development needs a healthy business environment to foster growth and innovation for SMEs, which calls for public sector intervention through entrepreneurship promotion policies promoting growth and job creation as well as to encourage SME Innovation. “In addition to ways to promote new ventures, it is important to acknowledge the justification for public intervention for reasons of overcoming economic instability, disadvantages based on ethnicity, imbalances between rural and urban development, and gender equality”, he said. 

Mr. Reddy briefed about CII’s initiatives focusing on entrepreneurship development, especially talking about its ‘Innovator Series’, BYST, dedicated centre of excellence to promote competitiveness in SMEs, besides others. “CII is also working on strengthening Industry-Institute Interaction, which would link research-innovation and business”, he said.

Mr. Reddy also shared his experience in bringing up Infotech Enterprises to the present shape and emphasized on the need to consider their business associates working for the company as entrepreneurs rather than their subjects. 

Earlier, Mr. Amish Kadakia, Chair, Yi (Hyderabad Chapter) & Partner, Runway9, in his welcome address, talked about the linkage between education, innovation and entrepreneurship. “There is a need to emphasize the need for linking R&D innovation and entrepreneurship. People with bright and innovative ideas must be able to put their ideas into action and the policies must be in a position to minimize the risks and maximize the benefits”, he said. 

Mr. Viren Shah, Co-Chair, Yi (Hyderabad Chapter) & Director, Scoops Ice Creams, delivered the concluding remarks. In his remarks, he emphasized that the entrepreneurs play a very important role in the socio-economic welfare of the country. “They identify the needs of the business, purchase the other factors of production and coordinate them for some productive purposes. They are the innovators, researchers, and risk takers of the company”, he said. 

The Technical conclave was also addressed by other key speakers like Mr. John Puddefoot, Head of Academy, The Aga Khan Academy, Mr. Srini Koppolu, Chairman, Setu Software & Ex-Managing Director & Corporate Vice President, Microsoft, Mr. Sateesh Andra, Managing Partner, Ventureast Tenet Fund, besides many other speakers.
