North East Land of opportunities Unexplored: Jitendra Singh

India’s north east is a region of opportunities unexplored, Dr Jitendra Singh said it is this fact one needs to keep in mind when discussing the region. In the last 3-4 years a lot of effort has been made to attract investors to the north-east region, he added. Emphasizing on the potential of the region, he said that the region is rich in production of various fruits and spices like Pineapple, Oranges, Banana and Ginger along with production of exotic fruits like Kiwi, Passion Fruit and Star fruit.

 

He highlighted steps taken by the Government to improve railway connectivity, setting up three mega food parks, Venture fund, besides, government’s “Mission Organic Value Chain Development of North East Region (MOVCDNER)”, under which the government is focusing on overall development of the region.   

 

Mr. Naveen Verma, Secretary DONER (Ministry of Development of North East Region), weighed in saying that farmers of North East areas as national as others, he said that challenges are there but specially in food processing sector significant reduction in weight of the output through processing along with substantial value addition can be done with small investments of as low as Rs. 2 to 3 Crores.  

 

Dr A K Yadav, Advisor, National Accreditation Board (Organic), APEDA, added that organic foods certification issued by Indian certification bodies are acceptable in Europe and United States and that North East has immense potential for Organic Food sourcing and emphasised that Sikkim is the first state which is fully organic.  

 

Mr. Pankaj Kumar, MD, North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Limited (NERAMAC) said that North East could be an international hub of organic food by 2022. 

 

Mr Subir Ghosh, MD, Annapurna Group, said that  as income and awareness increases amongst the masses, the organic food industry will become more robust and North East will play a key role going forward.
