Making India a Health Technology Hub and Expanding Ayushman to cover the missing middle
Oct 18, 2019

ASIA HEALTH 2019 which began from 16th -18th October saw the release of two studies- the first on India as a Health Tech Hub which captures important data related to current Health Technology ecosystems in India and what could be done to augment this nascent industry. The second was an Executive Summary on Ayushmaan 2.0  - Future forward – a proposal that is currently being worked upon by the CII National Committee on Health Insurance.

Dr. Renu Swarup, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology spoke on the importance of promoting a strong research base and innovation ecosystem. She emphasized the need for a local base whose foundations are based on research and development to promote India as a medical technology hub. She added that “The challenge was to move technology from the laboratory to commercial spaces.”  Moving forward, she advocated the importance of a Public-Private Partnership model where the industrial leaders should act as mentors and guide and not only provide investment. Collaborative measures are required in setting up innovation hubs where startups need to get connected to larger industrial players.

Dr. Indu Bhushan, CEO, Ayushman Bharat and National Health Authority re-iterated that the first phase of Ayushman Bharat was to provide a functional platform for the country as it is necessary to construct a robust ecosystem before we can realize the full potential of Ayushman Bharat 2.0.  He stated that to build such an ecosystem, we need to focus on four different areas: Health Benefit Packages, leveraging IT for the provision of services, monitoring fraud and abuse, and addressing the supply side issues of Ayushman Bharat.
