Government is Committed to Reform for Achieving $5 Trillion Economy; Government is Committed to Simplify Laws for Promoting Ease of Doing Business

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) along with Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF), is organizing “Legal Services Month” over virtual platform in November-December 2021, for providing a consolidated platform, on legal issues across legislations, over a series of Panel Discussions under this important initiative

Addressing the conference, Smt Meenakashi Lekhi Hon’ble Minister of State for External Affairs & Hon’ble Minister of State for Culture acknowledged the importance of Legal Service Month platform in providing exchange of ideas between Government, Industry, Legal Fraternity and all the Stakeholders for meaningful engagement and for driving evolution of Legal Architecture in the country. Hon’ble minister highlighted the need of streamlining and promoting the commercial laws for boosting the business and economy.

Ms Lekhi highlighted that objective of social goods and the business has to be balanced and has to work in tandem for achieving common objectives. Cyber laws, competition laws, Work place ethics, labour and environmental laws etc are important laws, that are becoming CenterStage to the business and Government is taking active measures for streamlining legislations. She highlighted that IBC has been a game changing law for reviving the economy. Government is committed to ease the Regulatory Architecture in the Country for promoting Ease of Doing Business as well as for helping India to become a USD 5 Trillion economy. Under the Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi, India is consistently rising in global ranking parameters and has rose to 63rd position from 142 in 2014. Government is committed to reform and invites suggestions from the Industry and Legal Fraternity for working together in order to make India a USD 5 Trillion economy.

Hon’ble Justice Shri R K Agrawal, President, National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission highlighted that customers are centre pillar of the economy and customers interest needs to be protected. Consumer laws have been put into place and streamlined to protect customers interest and enhance customers satisfaction. With the advent of online market place, customers are more susceptible to digital frauds. Speedy and timely disposition of cases are the need of the hour. Dispute resolution is the key for faster resolution of disputes. Product Liability is another area which needs key focus for protecting consumer’s interest. Manufacturer, service providers, e-commerce companies and intermediaries need to work together for safeguarding consumers and Industry should work together for developing a set of standards which maximises values for customers.

Dr Lalit Bhasin Chairman, Chairman, CII Task Force on Legal Services, President, Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF), Managing Partner, Bhasin & Co highlighted that simplification of laws, promotion of technology and ADR can help to resolve the access to justice, in a scale never possible before. The urgency of modernization of court is unprecedented.

The month-long session will have twelve sessions, focussing on key contemporary impacting Indian Industry and legal World. The wide-ranging deliberations will focus on responsibilities and liabilities of independent directors, streamlining competition law issues, mitigating corporate social responsibility challenges, strengthening Alternative Dispute Resolution for expediting justice, strengthening consumer protection and streamlining product liability, regulating cryptocurrency in the new digital era, recognition of in-house counsel, deliberations on ESG/ Climate Change issues, Intellectual Property Rights issues, IT & ITES issues, Labour & Land Law Reforms.
