India today has international sports superstars, such as Sachin Tendulkar, Mary Kom, Sania Mirza, Leander Paes and Vishwanathan Anand, to name a few, as well as some of the biggest sporting events of the world, like the Indian Premier League, the Cricket World Cup, the Commonwealth Games, etc. But what has not evolved exponentially is the expertise to manage these. Leveraging its role as an apex industry organization, CII is working with relevant stakeholders to focus attention on Sports as an industry with good growth prospects.
In this regard, CII, in partnership with the Australian Trade Commission and Deakin University, Australia, organized Sports Management Capacity Building Workshops on 10 April in New Delhi and on 12 April in Mumbai. The workshops saw the participation of both sports industry members as well as academicians. In New Delhi, Mr Tom Calder, Trade Commissioner, Australian Trade Commission, emphasized the need for capacity-building to make India a leading sporting nation, and suggested exploring collaboration opportunities between India and Australia for this.
