OECD – Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development

Website -  http://www.oecd.org/home/0,3305,en_2649_201185_1_1_1_1_1,00.html

OECD brings together the governments of countries committed to democracy and the market economy from around the world to  support sustainable economic growth, boost employment, raise living standards, maintain financial stability, assist other countries' economic development, contribute to growth in world trade.

There are 33 member countries of OECD:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,  Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg,  Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand,  Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States.

Over time, OECD’s focus has broadened to include extensive contacts with non-member economies and it now maintains co-operative relations with more than 70 of them.

OECD has official relations with other international organisations and bodies, such as the International Labour Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, International Atomic Energy Agency, and many other United Nations bodies.

The Organization provides a setting where governments compare policy experiences, seek answers to common problems, identify good practice and coordinate domestic and international policies.

OECD is dedicated towards supporting sustainable economic growth and has done major works in the area of Green Growth and Eco-innovation. Innovation in technologies and how they are applied are key to enabling industry to create new business values while also benefiting people and the planet. In recent years, manufacturing companies have been upgrading their efforts towards sustainable manufacturing from pollution prevention to integrated approaches that take into account product lifecycles and wider impacts. Eco-innovation helps to enable this evolution through a combination of technological and non-technological changes that can yield substantial environmental improvements. The current economic crisis and climate change negotiations should be taken as a great opportunity to move towards a green economy by accelerating eco-innovation.

BIAC – The Business and industry Advisory Committee to the OECD

Website - http://www.biac.org/index.html

BIAC is an independent international business association devoted to advising government policymakers at OECD and related fora on the many diversified issues of globalization and the world economy.
Officially recognized since its founding in 1962 as being representative of the OECD business community, BIAC promotes the interests of business by engaging, understanding and advising policy makers on a broad range of issues with the overreaching objectives of:

  • Positively influencing the direction of OECD policy initiatives;
  • Ensuring business and industry needs are adequately addressed in OECD policy decision instruments (policy advocacy), which influence national legislation;
  • Providing members with timely information on OECD policies and their implications for business and industry.

BIAC advocates consensus industry views so to ensure that the resulting policy instruments and guidance assist, not hinder, private sector capacity to generate growth and prosperity.
BIAC’s strength comes from their close relationship with their Members, the major business organisations in the OECD member countries, as well as our Observers, leading business and industry associations in non-OECD member countries. BIAC is also supported by our Associate Experts; numerous supra-national sectoral business organisations.

NIST carries out its mission in four cooperative programs:

  • The NIST Laboratories, conducting research that advances the nation's technology infrastructure and is needed by U.S. industry to continually improve products and services;
  • The Baldrige National Quality Program, which promotes performance excellence among U.S. manufacturers, service companies, educational institutions, health care providers, and nonprofit organizations; conducts outreach programs and manages the annual Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award which recognizes performance excellence and quality achievement;
  • The Technology Innovation Program, which provides cost-shared awards to industry, universities, and consortia for research on potentially revolutionary technologies that address critical national and societal needs.
