Upskilling of Sabai Artisans Eastern Region
CII has undertaken an upskilling/reskilling training programme for this artisan community to bridge the artisans’ skill gap and reorient traditional art and design with current market trends. The long- term objective of the project is to improve livelihood security of the marginal section of the society (in particular women) by introducing skill development initiatives, improving present skill sets of the area and facilitating market linkages.

Project Description

Handicraft Sector in India is the second largest economic unit (Source: IBEF Economic Report 2018) after agriculture. Therefore, developing this sector is very essential. This intervention will lead to the economic development of the artisans of Nayagram, Gopiballavpur I & II area of Jhargram which is currently backward in terms of economic development. Sabai grass is one of the major sources of income for the local artisan community. Product diversification is expected to generate higher income thereby enhancement of employment opportunities if these Sabai Products can reach beyond the local market. Market development, the core for sustainable livelihoods, has not been looked at on a priority basis so far. There are very few incentives offered, which too are applicable for exporters and not for artisans to develop market at local level. This lack of support for investment in market development deters many young artisans to work in handicrafts and move away to more profitable enterprises.

Cluster needs to be built in order to create a value chain that could also include other job roles (like dyeing, weaving, product making etc). This will help in developing a sizable range of products to display and sell on their own.

These Sabai-made products has good potential in market. It could be promoted as ecofriendly home accessories and home decor products like Bags, Mats, Bottle holders, cushions etc. However, the artisans own the part of value chain which is restricted to preparing rope from Sabai Grass and making basic products. Product development activities such as diversification and fabrication are done in urban centers and profits do not flow down proportionately to ground level.

To increase the income of primary producers, design development and product diversification are required, so that other markets can be tapped for home accessories and home decoration items.

Furthermore, artisans should be registered as an enterprise and to enhance productivity the group needs to be trained on modern techniques like learn methodologies etc., so that they can compete at national market.
