Ø       National GI Conference(20-21 Dec 2012)

Geographical Indications (GIs) are Intellectual Property Rights which identifies the origin of a good. India has immense potential in GIs to be registered and with a huge biodiversity resource and a long list of handicrafts and food products still open to be identified for protection and enforcement. There are over 1000 + products with potential to be registered as GI’s from India. Every state of India has immensely contributed to the list of GI registered Products and the present list have178 Registered GI Products out of the 398 Filed Applications. it is understood that not every Indian GI has the potential of capturing global market, but many of them have. However we have not seen enough initiative and support system for such promising GIs having healthy export market.

To identify among Indian GIs, those have high potential for capturing global market; to learn experiences of successful global GI products and to initiate a time-bound program a create a roadmap for them to achieve high export market and to provide knowledge, business, financial support to really achieve the goal, the Confederation of Indian Industry is organizing this forum where GI holders, respective government (state & central) departments, enabling institutions will come on one platform on 20th and 21st December, 2012 in New Delhi.CII is planning to invite

1.       Indian GI holders whose GIs possess high potential for capturing global market to share their issues and challenges in accessing global markets (country-specific).

2.       Successful Global GI holders (Indian and international) to share their journey from local product to global products.

3.       Government departments and organisations (state & central) to share existing support mechanism for GI holders to upgrade their products to meet compliances and to access global market and also to learn from the GI holders, their needs.

4.       Industry (in the respective fields) to explore partnership with GI holders, as feasible.
