Responding to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's call to Indian Industry to take Affirmative Action to create education and employment opportunities for the weaker sections of society, CII formed task force subsequently proposed concrete steps to be taken by Indian Industry for creating education and employment opportunities for people belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe. Affirmative Action for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes communities is defined as a voluntary commitment by Indian companies to help the Government and civil society in the national endeavour to ensure equal opportunity to members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes communities. The progress is being made on 4 Es i.e., (i) Entrepreneurship Development; (ii) Employability; (iii) Education; and (iv) Employment for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes. This has been well received by industry. In addition, CII developed a Code of Conduct on Affirmative Action, which is being followed by companies. The Code relates to non-discrimination, assistance, and transparency with respect to employees/ applicants/ vendors from the SC & ST communities. This is a voluntary commitment. Needless to say member companies have been proactive and enthusiastic, energized by CII's Mission mode. Various companies have evolved different programmes and there is an enthusiasm about greater engagement with society and the underprivileged. CII has received spontaneous support from industry.
