India has been unleashing significant reforms in the sphere of ease of doing business, encompassing both Centre as well as states. Consequently, country’s global ranking in the Doing Business Report of the World Bank has assumed a sharp upward trend in recent years, improving from the 142nd position in 2015 to the 77th position in 2019. Barring a few areas like Registering Property and Enforcing Contracts, India’s ranking is either already among the top 50 economies or moving in this direction rapidly. While swift implementation of business reforms in areas such as Starting a Business, Trading Across Borders, Paying Taxes, Resolving Insolvency, and Dealing with Construction Permits have been extremely beneficial to the industry, there is a scope for enhancing the effectiveness in implementation of reforms by creating greater awareness, incorporating feedback from the industry and learning from the best practices.
The current issue of the ‘CII Ease of Doing Business Watch’, while highlighting the major impact of business reforms in key areas and CII initiatives, provides feedback from the industry, perspectives of the policy makers and key best practices in the following Sections:
