Employee Volunteering Programme: Training on environment to Government school teachers through E-modules held on 26 & 27 April 2010 at SRM University, Kancheepuram District, Tamil Nadu

At a time when words such as “climate change” and “global warming” are being widely used by the common man, one wonders if these terms make sense to the lay person,  especially school children. In an attempt at simplifying the complexities of “Global warming,” CII had released an e-module on Environment titled Stop! In the Name of Earth, both in English and Tamil.

This 60 minute interactive e-module aims at teaching school children about the environment through the animated movie and appropriate activity.
Through this initiative, children will:

  • Understand causes and effects of Global Warming
  • Learn the Effects of Environmental pollution
  • Identify with ways in they can conserve and recycle to protect the environment within their home and school environment

The animated movie is followed with activities such as songs, comprehension passages, writing simple descriptions which ensure that students understand what they have seen, thereby encouraging them to follow eco-friendly practices at their level.

In order to sensitize teachers from Government Schools on the pressing issue, CII SR with the assistance of volunteers from Tech Mahindra organized a train the master trainers initiative at the SRM University wherein 130 master trainers from the Kancheepuram District had a hands on experience with the module. These trainers would inturn train teachers and students covering over a 1000 schools and 2 lakh students.

At the training, it was suggested that the module is included as part of the computer training programme of the State Government  and distribution of CDs through the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan for maximum reach.
