During a session on Sustainable Mobility: Innovation & Integration, Mr R Dinesh, Immediate Past President, CII and Executive Vice-chairman, TVS Supply Chain Solutions, said, “The mobility ecosystem is fast changing, and it is required to not just transform but also to integrate.”
The industry needs to come together to think of and build on ideas to reduce congestion, increase last and first mile connectivity and pollution arising from them. He said that as industry “we need to partner the government” in this effort. “Revolution to resolve the future of mobility in India will not only benefit the user of mobility but each and every one associated with the entire mobility eco-system,” said Dinesh.
Complementing the industry effort, Mr Mr Tarun Sawhney, Chairman, CII National Committee on Bioenergy, and vice-chairman, Triveni Engineering, said India has achieved 20% ethanol blending targets set by Hon’ble Prime Minister 11 months ahead of its schedule. By achieving E20, India saves 1,000 crores litter of oil import annually amounting to Rs 60,000 crore.
Ms Shraddha Suri Marwah, President, The Automobile Components Manufacturers Association (ACMA), and Chairman and Managing Director, Subros, mentioned that the fast-changing consumer preferences on mobility is a challenge to develop the products, it also gives the nation a competitive edge globally. Ms Marwa mentioned that developing a robust R&D system in India is key to indigenisation of products and design since we have the challenge of critical minerals and Li-ion resources
Mr Salil Gupte, Chairman, CII National Committee on Aerospace and President, Boeing India & South Asia said that aviation is one of the hard-to-abate sectors and decarbonisation will require a lot of effort. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), as it develops from blending bio-methanol and green hydrogen, will drive these efforts in future as economies of scale will prevail reducing the current cost of SAF which is 2.5 times higher currently. He also said Boeing has set a target to produce 100% SAF enabled aircraft production by 2030.
Cautioning the tier – I and II cities in India, Mr Kamal Bali, President and Managing Director, Volvo India Group said that these cities are still greenfield and must not follow the megacity’s ways of development. The megacities, which were developed to accommodate growing population and demand for mobility, did not foresee the challenges that are required to change plans.
Mr Loknath Behra, Managing Director, Kochi Metro who has also pioneered the water metro in Kochi said that it is important to integrate the various modes of transport and its payment system for ease of its users. As mass transit operators, system need to be more commuter friendly which thereby will increase the ridership. He also said various tests are being conducted to use metros in the inter and intra city for logistic purposes. Water transits have a huge scope to be integrated in the system for long distance logistic movement.
The Confederation of Indian Industry today launched a Coalition on Future Mobility during its Annual Business Summit in New Delhi. The Coalition was launched by Mr R Dinesh, Chairman CII Coalition on Future Mobility and Co-chair Mr Satyakant Arya. The Coalition will work towards integrating the various aspects of the mobility ecosystem and follow the vision of clean and sustainable mobility solutions that help in bringing down logistics costs and emissions, reduce fossil fuel dependency and ensure an efficient, future-ready mobility network.
The Coalition takes cue from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of 7Cs [Common, Connected, Convenient, Congestion-free, Charged (electric) Clean and Connecting Edge]. The Coalition will coordinate efforts across sectors, adopt clean and efficient practices, promote innovation and use of technology, and streamline infrastructure development.
