The logistics sector which has been growing at a CAGR of 10% is a dynamic and vibrant sector stated Mr. N. Sivasailam, Special Secretary, Department of Logistics - Ministry of Commerce and Industry, at the inaugural launch of the Logistics Summit 2019 organised by CII Institute of Logistic coinciding with the IETF 2019. The inaugural session concluded with the launch of the Degree Apprenticeship Program in the presence of Mr VLVSS Subba Rao, Senior Economic Advisor & Additional Secretary, MHRD, Govt of India and Mr Rajesh Agarwal, Jt Secretary & CVO, Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Government of India.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Sivasailam urged the industry to focus on skilling the youth, along with encouraging large sectoral funding to greatly impact the entire Indian logistics sector. He stated that the Department of Logistics and the government have been working on various projects as part of the National Action Plan.
The logistics portal which is in the final stages of development, Mr. Sivasailam is one of the key projects the Department, and government, are currently undertaking. “We are trying to build a platform of platforms. The portal will provide a base software accessible for all industry members to use. Separately we are also creating a servicing tower, which will provide multi-modal services on one platform for the industry,” he said about the portal.
Mr. Sivasailam also introduced the logistics tool, which will be powered by crowd-sourced information – with anonymous tracking inputs – to benefit all industry members who use the app. He added, “The data from various logistics drivers will allow industry to start identifying heat maps across the country.”
In his address, Mr. R. Dinesh, Chairman CII Institute of Logistics Advisory Council and Managing Director TVS Logistics Services Limited highlighted the need for set standards in the logistics sector. “Technology usage and leveraging of information will be paramount towards the growth of this sector,” he added.
Mr. Dinesh said the Degree Apprenticeship Program launched at the Summit “aims to address the skill gap in the logistics sector by bringing together academia, government and industry together to train the future workforce of the industry”.
