The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), in partnership with EY-Parthenon India, today launched a report titled "Vision 2047: India — Building the Innovation Powerhouse of Tomorrow" at the 8th CII Pharma & Lifesciences Summit 2026, held in New Delhi.
The report arrives at a defining moment for India's pharmaceutical Industry, an inflection point, where the Indian Pharma Industry is evolving from a cost and volume-driven model to one centred on patients, innovation, technology, and equitable access. Presenting a comprehensive four-pillar roadmap, the report lays out how India can transition from the "Pharmacy of the World" to an "Innovation Hub for the World" by 2047.
The four pillars outlined in the report provide a structured pathway to achieving this vision. The first pillar emphasising on strengthening trust and resilient manufacturing leadership, building on India's established foundation as a globally trusted supplier of affordable medicines. The second calls for differentiation through innovation and advanced therapeutics, including precision medicine, genomics, biologics, biosimilars, and cell and gene therapies, enabling India to move meaningfully beyond generics.
The third pillar envisions India leapfrogging through AI and data-driven pharmaceutical ecosystems, harnessing artificial intelligence, digital health, connected manufacturing and data-driven decision-making across the entire pharma value chain, from drug discovery and clinical trials to regulatory affairs and supply chains. The fourth pillar centres on democratising access through patient-centric healthcare delivery, ensuring that scientific advances are accompanied by affordability, healthcare financing, rare disease support, and resilient digital infrastructure to ensure that scientific advances reach all patients.
Overall, the report envisions a future where patient-centricity, innovation, AI enablement and equitable access converge to create a globally competitive and innovation-led pharmaceutical ecosystem for India by 2047.
