Punjab, often referred to as the ‘Granary of India’ is one of India’s key agrarian and industrial state with strong infrastructure, skilled human capital and a highly entrepreneurial population. The state spans over an area of 50,362 sq. km and is home to over 3 crore people. Punjab has recorded a Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of
₹83,863,661 lakhs for the year 2024-25 at current prices and has grown at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR at constant prices) of 6.3% between 2020–21 and 2024–25. Per capita income in FY25 stood at Rs 2,21,197 (at current prices). Its strong connectivity includes around 1,47,862 km of road network, 2,265 km of rail network, two international airports (Amritsar and Chandigarh) and 4 domestic airports (Bathinda, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Pathankot). It is also supported by a robust logistics ecosystem comprising of 2 air cargo terminals, 5 inland container depots, and other allied infrastructure facilities. Historically anchored in agriculture, the state’s economy has evolved into a strong industrial base with 52 focal points, three operational Special Economic Zones (SEZs), and around 1,974.53 hectares of available industrial land. The state has actively pursued reforms to make it easier and more attractive to do business. These efforts include rationalised power tariffs, a robust single-window clearance mechanism, progressive labour reforms, and other investor-friendly initiatives. To support investment and industrial growth, the state has introduced the Industrial and Business Development Policy 2026, positioning itself as the first state in India to allow investors to ‘self-design’ incentive packages from 20 fiscal incentive options. The state has also introduced several sector-focused policies including the Startup Policy, Retail Investment Policy, Integrated Logistics Policy, Affordable Housing Policy, Electric Vehicle Policy, IT/ ITES Policy, Biotechnology Policy, Tourism Policy, and Renewable Energy Policy amongst others. The Punjab Bureau of Investment Promotion functions as a one-stop clearance system, facilitating investor approvals through coordination across departments such as pollution control, excise and taxation, labour, factory licensing, boiler registration, town and country planning, land, and power.
